Position Description


Advertised Job Summary
The University of South Carolina Beaufort is seeking a Water Quality Lab Manager. This position will help develop and manage a growing Water Quality Lab to analyze and monitor the waters of the Lowcountry. At a minimum, analyses will include those for total nitrogen and phosphorus, fecal coliform, enterococci, turbidity, suspended solids and biological oxygen demand. The candidate will identify, purchase, run and maintain appropriate laboratory equipment associate with the above analyses. As the lab grows, it is expected that testing will expand to include additional nutrient analysis, harmful algal toxins, and chemical contaminants, among other possibilities. The candidate will 1) maintain State of South Carolina DHEC certification for the lab and all water quality parameters, 2) collect water samples for analysis as appropriate, 3) develop, implement and maintain standard operating procedures, 4) maintain written manuals for the proper receipt, storage, documentation and processing of samples received and analyzed, 5) conduct various water quality analyses per established operating procedures, 6) develop a system to store, evaluate and disseminate resulting data appropriately, and 7) plan, manage and administer the laboratory’s budget including appropriate documentation and record keeping. The candidate will also have the opportunity to participate in the design and implementation of applied research projects related to water quality and have the ability to train and supervise graduate and undergraduate research assistants as needed.
Minimum Qualifications
Masters degree in a related field and two years of relevant experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
Working knowledge of laboratory methods, equipment, facilities, materials and experience in the operation, maintenance and repair of laboratory equipment. The ability to maintain a high degree of quality assurance/quality control. The ability to develop, evaluate and implement research methodologies and laboratory procedures and plan, organize and evaluate activities. The ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing to a variety of audiences. Proficiency with basic computer programs to include word processing, data spreadsheets and statistical analyses. Experience in budget development, management, evaluation and administration. Must have the ability to assist with the writing of grant proposals and scientific publications.
