The Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering (PME) was established in May 2019 and evolved from the Institute for Molecular Engineering, which was founded in 2011. The PME integrates science and engineering to address global challenges from the molecular level up. The PME’s rigorous academic and research programs are made possible through the University of Chicago’s unique partnership with Argonne National Laboratory. The Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering is the first new school at the University of Chicago in three decades and the first school in the nation dedicated to molecular engineering. In the next phase of growth as a School, the PME will continue to expand its team of world-class faculty researchers and empower students from diverse backgrounds to collaborate with faculty in cutting-edge facilities. The PME aims to bring solutions for urgent societal problems to the forefront, while training the next generation of scientific leaders and entrepreneurs.


Job Summary
 

The job participates in scientific research projects. Ensures compliance of research activities with institutional, state, and federal regulatory policies, procedures, directives and mandates. Analyzes possible solutions using standard procedures. Writes articles, reports and manuscripts. Assists in drafting presentations on research findings.

Responsibilities

  • Set up and perform experiments in mice.
  • Manage mouse colony, including breeding and genotyping.
  • Collect, analyze, and maintain data and/or specimens.
  • Maintain equipment and experiment rooms include ordering equipment and supplies.
  • Ability to guide and train newer, less-experienced lab personnel to become proficient with routine procedures and protocols.
  • Transcribes and records data and develop ability to contribute to data interpretation and analysis.
  • Assist in drafting presentations or reports stemming from scientific contributions in the laboratory.
  • Assist in maintaining an organized lab space.
  • Ensures compliance with federal, state, and institutional regulations regarding safe and ethical performance of research, including contributing to protocol development, protocol maintenance and record-keeping, visits by officials for audit/verification of compliance purposes.
  • Supports data collection and analytical needs of research projects. Conducts literature reviews and helps write reports and manuscripts. Ensures project compliance with different policies, procedures, directives, and mandates.
  • Takes responsibility for the following laboratory duties: recognizing abnormal results and varying conditions or procedures to correct problems; setting up and performing experiments. Analyze the meaning, significance, causes, and effects of the subject.
  • Performs other related work as needed.


Minimum Qualifications
 

Education:

Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.

Preferred Qualifications

Education:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Animal Science or related field with progressively responsible research experience.
  • Master’s Degree in related field with progressively responsible research experience.

Experience:

  • Significant relevant research experience.Ssupervisory experience.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in techniques across multiple fields, including molecular biology (DNA/RNA isolation, PCRs, gene expression, protein blotting).
  • Demonstrated proficiency in vivo biology (handling of rodents, management of colonies, dissections, organ digestion, organ preservation, histology, and perfusions), and advanced biological procedures (flow cytometry, imaging).
  • Familiarity with in vivo immunological models and developing ability to contribute to model selection during the experimental planning process.
  • Experience working in higher education or an academic research environment.

Technical Skills or Knowledge

  • Familiarity with common computer programs and standard laboratory equipment.
  • Knowledge of molecular biology techniques
  • Knowledge of immunohistochemistry, including live animal or human tissue preservation and processing
  • Knowledge of genotyping (PCRs, qPCRs, sequencing)
  • Knowledge of in vivo biology
  • Knowledge of cellular analysis methods (flow cytometry, imaging)

Preferred Competencies

  • Knowledge of animal research techniques and methods.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving, organization, analytical and coordination skills including attention to details.
  • Demonstrated excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to read and keep abreast of technical developments.
  • Demonstrated ability to read and comprehend scientific and technical literature, and methods to stay abreast of developments in the field.
  • Excellent time management skills and the ability to handle multiple, concurrent tasks within deadlines with minimal supervision
  • Must be able to prioritize urgent tasks while ensuring established deadlines are met.
  • Ability to be flexible and adaptable to changes in workflow and procedures.
  • Ability to work independently and a part of a team and interact with a diverse workforce.
  • Ability to train technical concepts to other lab personnel.
  • Knowledge and experience of related research techniques or methods
  • Knowledge of and familiarity with local and Federal regulations, guidelines, and procedures
