Overview
The Kocher Lab at Princeton is looking for a Research Specialist II to help us study the mechanisms that shape variation in social behavior. The Kocher Lab udies how genes and environment interact to generate behavioral variation. We often compare the genomes and the brains of social and solitary bee species to better understand how the â˜social brainâ™ develops and evolves. We are looking for a motivated individual with experience in molecular biology and cell culture to pilot new methods in bees. Under general supervision, the ideal candidate with pilot and troubleshoot new lab protocols, and collect, verify, record, and compile data and information in support of their designated research projects. The candidate must be comfortable working with live bees.
Rank and salary will be commensurate with experience. Salary will include the full benefits package. The position is open and review of applications will begin immediately. This is a one-year term position, with the possibility of renewal contingent upon satisfactory performance and continued funding.
Responsibilities
Your primary role is to work closely with the PI to develop new methods for functional genomic studies in bees. In this role, you will perform various research procedures and operate a variety of instruments and other scientific equipment. You will be expected to collect, record, organize and verify the accuracy of data; perform calculations and prepare charts, graphs, and reports. May use software applications to assemble, manipulate and/or format data and test reports
Qualifications
Essential qualifications:
- Experience in basic molecular biology techniques, including: PCR, DNA/RNA extractions, solution preparation
- Good hands in lab and dedication to hands-on laboratory work
- Ability to lead a project independently and problem solve as needed
- Ability to work well with others in a team environment
- Excellent organizational skills and a strong attention to detail
- Comfortable working with live bees
Other valuable experience (not required):
- Experience working with Drosophila or similar genetic models
- Experience teaching or training others in a laboratory setting
