Oversees field and laboratory operations associated with research in the Biscayne Coastal Wetlands and manages related collaboration with the South Florida Water Management District.

  • Develops protocols for examining samples for microscopic examination and identifies algae using established images and keys.
  • Trains students and technicians how to process, count, and identify algae.
  • Coordinates and conducts field work in the hot, wet environments of the Biscayne Coastal Wetlands and Everglades on foot, by airboat, kayak, or marine boat, and helicopter.
  • Coordinates and supervises laboratory analyses to generate data from collected samples from the Biscayne Coastal Wetlands and the Everglades.
  • Documents new species of algae using image capture tools on the microscope and develops protocols for publicly sharing this information
  • Develops reports including writing, analysis and presentation of data, and making revisions based on feedback
  • Informs data management in a database and performs quality control/assurance on project data.
  • Co-authors publications and co-presents results at scientific conferences
  • Follows safety guidelines and complies with FIU rules and regulations when completing field work (boating safety) and laboratory work (EH&S protocols)
  • Attends laboratory meetings and makes recommendations for changes in workflows as needed.

 

Bachelor's degree in an appropriate specialization and four (4) years of experience or Master's degree and two (2) years of experience.

  • Experience in ecological field and laboratory work
  • Familiarity with ecological and biological data collection protocols and how to summarize data using R and to compile and draft reports.
  • Degree in Biology, Environmental Sciences, Earth Sciences or related field

$50,000 - $55,000

 

Begin time: 8:30 AM
End time: 5:00 PM

  • Able to work flexible hours in the often-harsh environment of South Florida
