Research Specialist I - Department of Biology - Georgetown University College of Arts & Sciences

Job Overview

The Research Specialist I for the Zarrella Lab conducts research for projects focused on interspecies interactions in microbial communities in duties that include but are not limited to:

  • Orders and maintains stocks of supplies and ordering
  • Performs experiments using systems biology, bacterial genetics, and biochemical approaches
  • Trains undergraduates and new lab members as opportunity presents

Work Interactions and Work Mode Designation

Reporting to Tiffany Zarrella, Assistant Professor and PI, the Research Specialist I works closely with other lab research staff, including undergraduate and graduate students.

This position has been designated as On-Campus. Please note that work mode designations are regularly reviewed in order to meet the evolving needs of the University.  Such review may necessitate a change to a position’s mode of work designation. Requirements and Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science degree or an equivalent degree in life sciences
  • 0 - 2 years of related experience
  • Excellent skills in data management, record keeping, communication, team building, and computer skills
  • Excellent computer skills
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • At least 3 years of related experience in a molecular-based research laboratory and be able to perform bench research independently
  • Experience working with BSL-2 microbial organisms and using genetics - e.g. , cloning, next-generation sequencing) and biochemical approaches
  • Proficiency using basic laboratory equipment and graphing/data analysis software
