Research Specialist
Job Description
The Biosciences Histology Core at Arizona State University in Tempe Az, is looking to hire a Histology Research Specialist. The Histology Core is one of thirty facilities within Knowledge Enterprise. The Histology Core location in ISBT1 is located in conjunction with the Flow Cytometry, Regenerative Medicine and Advanced Light Microscopy facilities to provides instrument and service resources to academic and industry users from a wide range of disciplines. Duties for this Research Specialist position include, but are not limited to, processing histological service requests, maintaining EH&S documents and training, developing SOPs and quick start manuals, instrument training, assisting with flow cytometry training as well as providing support to students and researchers.

Salary Range
$42,000 - $49,920 per year; DOE
Essential Duties
- Conduct routine histological work such as tissue processing, embedding, sectioning and H&E staining on formalin fixed paraffin embedded (FFPE) and frozen human or animal derived tissues for incoming service requests.
- Perform routine IHC/ICC staining using optimized protocols and potential image analysis for incoming service requests.
- Maintain EH&S and DACT forms for annual reporting.
- Maintain annual hazardous waste, Fire, Lab, Biosafety EH&S training certification.
- Training and assisting researchers and students in the use of microscopes, microtomes, cryostats, and general lab equipment.
- Training and assisting researchers and students in cell culture/aseptic technique.
- Assist the flow cytometry manager with training and working with large projects.
- Biological and hazardous waste management.
- Animal colony maintenance.
- Inventory, stocking and reagent/supply orders.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in a field appropriate to the area of assignment AND two years related research experience; OR, Six years research experience appropriate to the area of assignment; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.
Desired Qualifications
- Evidence of a Bachelor's degree in a field appropriate to the area of assignment AND 1-3 years related research experience; OR, 3 years research experience appropriate to the area of assignment; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.
- Hands-on experience in histology techniques such as tissue processing, embedding, microtomy (FFPE) and cyro-sectioning (frozen).
- Hands on experience with immunohistochemistry (IHC) using previously optimized protocols and methods.
- Experience working with brightfield and fluorescent microscopes, image acquisition and analysis.
- Experience with aseptic cell culture technique.
- Evidence of effective communication, organizational and basic business skills (Outlook, Google Drive, Dropbox, Excel)
Working Environment
- Activities are performed in a lab setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding, and manipulating a computer mouse: required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work.
- Will be required to wear personal protective equipment before entering laboratories such as lab coat, gloves, safety glasses, and closed toe shoes.
- Frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing, and pulling up to 25 pounds.
- Ability to clearly communicate to perform essential functions.
