We are seeking a Research Specialist to support the lab of Dr. Joseph Mougous at The University of Washington. This individual will work collaboratively with a dynamic and interactive team that primarily investigates the mechanisms bacteria employ for interbacterial competition in complex communities such as the gut microbiome. This role will be responsible for leading research projects within the lab, including both hands-on experimentation and analysis and supervision of additional team members working on the projects. New projects will developed by this individual in collaboration with the Investigator and other senior scientists in the lab. We are looking for someone who not only has a passion for science, but a capacity for leadership, and a deep interest in helping the lab function at its highest level.

This successful candidate will serve a high-ranking scientific role within the lab and will be part of the team responsible for managing day-to-day operations.

What You’ll Do:

Research Support :   80%. 

  • Help execute vision of PI and ensure follow through on research initiatives

  • Perform hands-on experiments in support of the research, including studying interactions between bacteria and developing technological applications for bacterial toxins

  • Support the collaborative research environment and provide guidance on technical and operational aspects of research. 

    • Identify methodological problems in research protocols and develop solutions to those problems. 

    • Develop innovative techniques and systems required to meet research goals, and may coordinate specialized research functions such as microscopy, genomic analysis/sequencing, protein purification and structural biology, bioinformatics, etc..

  • Use and understand a wide variety of molecular and microbiology protocols – such as cloning, bacterial genetics, protein purification and structural characterization, bioinformatics pipeline execution, etc.

  • Support and mentor junior lab members in scientific methods, and instill in them a strong sense of lab citizenship

  • Participate in laboratory meetings and read literature applicable to the research area

Lab Operations :    20%. 

  • Coordinating with other laboratory staff to monitor laboratory inventory and oversight on ordering and budgetary questions.

  • Oversight of process optimization in the lab, and be a change champion for improved policies and procedures

  • Assist with lab organization and maintenance of inventory, equipment, etc.

Skills You Bring:

  • Master’s level degree in Biology or related discipline; or equivalent education and experience

    • PhD level degree preferred

  • At least three years of experience in a molecular biology or microbiology-focused lab

  • High level proficiency with standard molecular biology techniques including PCR, DNA sequencing, and cloning is required.

  • Previous experience in one or more of the following technical areas is desirable:

    • Bioinformatics

    • Mass spectrometry

    • Biochemistry

    • Structural biology

  • Strong multitasking skills and time management

  • Strong communication skills

  • Ability to apply experience to new techniques and protocols and learn complex tasks with general instruction

  • Ability to identify areas of confusion and seek help when needed

  • Strong enthusiasm for developing new skills and expertise

  • Exemplary organizational skills and attention to detail

  • Ability to follow instruction with an eagerness to learn, grow professionally, and be mentored

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications

  • Ability to use good judgment in managing deadlines and responding to inquiries


Physical Requirements

Remaining in a normal seated or standing position for extended periods of time; reaching and grasping by extending hand(s) or arm(s); dexterity to manipulate objects with fingers, for example using a keyboard; communication skills using the spoken word; ability to see and hear within normal parameters; ability to move about workspace. The position requires mobility, including the ability to move materials weighing up to several pounds (such as a laptop computer or tablet). Work may involve possible exposure to malodorous vapors, low dose radiation, contamination by toxic chemicals and acids and presence of carcinogenic substances.
