Primary Function of Organizational Unit

The Prestage Department of Poultry Science, in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences is one of only 6 Poultry Science Departments in the United States and is focused on research, extension, and education that serves and supports the production of poultry and poultry products in North Carolina, the United States, as well as worldwide.

Essential Job Duties

The primary function of the Research Specialist is to serve as the senior research specialist and manager for the avian immunology laboratory in the Prestage Department of Poultry Science.

Primary duties include, but not limited to:

  • designing, developing, conducting research experiments and data analysis
  • Training and supervising other laboratory personnel
  • Maintaining laboratory inventories, records
  • Ordering and managing budgets
  • Ensuring laboratory compliance with NCSU, state, and federal regulations.
Other Work/Responsibilities

The Research Specialist will work both independently and collaboratively with other members of the avian immunology lab, as well as other research groups in the department and across campus.

Assist undergraduate students, graduate students, post-docs, visiting scientists, etc. with their projects.

Other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Experience/Education

Bachelor’s degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Departmental Required Skills
  • Proficient with gSuite, Microsoft Office or similar product, browsers and search engines, basic computer security practices and ability to troubleshoot basic hardware and networking issues.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • The ability to work well independently and in a collaborative research environment.
Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education
  • Master’s degree in biochemistry, microbiology, animal science, poultry science, cell biology, immunology, or a related field.
  • Experience with various molecular biology methods and concepts including but not limited to PCR, Real-Time PCR, cloning, mutagenesis, genome editing, sequencing, next generation sequencing, and recombinant protein expression.
  • Experience with animal tissue culture
  • Experience with immune assays such as ELISA, western blot, flow cytometry, bioassays, reporter assays, and immunohistochemistry.
  • Experience with bacteria, viruses, and parasites and understanding of proper biosecurity and biocontainment principles.
  • Experience working with live poultry or other animals in a research setting
  • Experience with laboratory management including, but not limited to budgets, inventory, and regulatory compliance.
  • Experience with various data analysis software programs such as Snap Gene, CLC, FlowJo, Prism, SAS, R, and other similar programs.
  • Experience in communication of research results in peer reviewed journals.
Required License or Certification

A valid driver’s license is required for travelling to remote farms and sample sites and to transport animals, samples and supplies. NC driver’s license is required within 60 days of hire and must be maintained throughout employment.
