Barbara Davis Center for Diabetes has an opening for a full-time University Staff (unclassified) Research Service Open Rank (Entry-Intermediate) Laboratory Science Professional position.

The Laboratory Sciences Professional will collaboratively manage a complex mouse colony, perform lab maintenance duties and ordering, and perform in vitro and in vivo experiments. The individual hired will be trained by and work with the supervisor and other lab members to support and perform research studying how the immune response functions under normal conditions and in disease states such as autoimmunity or cancer.

Nature of Work

The Barbara Davis Center for Diabetes (BDC) is a multi-disciplinary diabetes center affiliated with the University of Colorado, School of Medicine. The patient population is children and adults with Type 1 Diabetes, but also includes occasional patients with Type 2 Diabetes. The BDC has a large research program allowing many ongoing educational opportunities.

Laboratory Science Professionals perform duties in an experimental lab, or wet lab, and handle a variety of chemicals and/or potential “wet” hazards. Laboratory Science Professionals perform duties in laboratories where chemicals, drugs, or other materials or biological matters are tested and analyzed.

Professionals at the intermediate level are responsible for exercising discretion, analytical skill, personal accountability and responsibility in a wide range of areas including academic, administrative, managerial and student services functions. Work involves creating, integrating, applying and sharing knowledge directly related to a professional field. At the intermediate level, duties are less limited in scope and are performed independently with occasional guidance and direction from other professionals.

Examples of Duties Performed

  • Collaborate with and support Principal Investigators (PI) and other stakeholders with laboratory and research functions
  • Utilize a variety of laboratory techniques required for research projects
  • Perform experiments and tabulate and analyze research using techniques that include but are not limited to:
    • Disease monitoring in mice
    • Dissection of mice
    • In vivo treatments of mice
    • Immune cell isolation from mice
    • DNA/RNA extraction
    • PCR
    • Tissue culture maintenance of mouse or human cells
    • Flow cytometry
    • Microscopic analysis of mouse or human tissues
    • Performing or assisting with in vitro or in vivo experiments
  • Support analytical testing process using standard lab support knowledge in the collection and review of conditions, including preserving samples, completing sample preparation, documenting and communicating results
  • Perform pre-analytical, analytical and post analytical test process and evaluate results produced
  • Prepare lab for daily operations, including stocking materials, equipment, safety, cleanliness, and related areas
  • Provide animal care related to research studies, as necessary
    • Mouse handling, breeding, genotyping
  • Pick up, transport, and maintain results, samples, documents, materials and other items as needed
  • Dispose of laboratory materials and samples using well established guidelines and instructions
  • Review, complete and process logs, documents, databases, and related materials and information
  • Provide support researching issues and developing recommendations to resolve process, unit and related issues
  • Review and implement lab support policies, practices and programs to meet organizational, operations and management needs
  • Ensure compliance with applicable laws, rules and regulations; receive guidance and direction or escalate when required

Intermediate Position Additional Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Independently and creatively identify laboratory solutions
  • Independently Review, develop and implement new or modified laboratory techniques required for research projects
  • Assist Team Leads, Supervisors and/or management with creation and implementation of processes and procedures and quality improvement initiatives
  • Assist and train junior team members

Entry Laboratory Services

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in biology, molecular biology, chemistry, genetics or related field
    • A combination of education and related technical/paraprofessional experience may be substituted for the bachelor’s degree on a year for year basis

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience or background within an experimental or wet lab
  • Interest in collaboratively managing a complex mouse colony, performing lab maintenance duties, and executing in vitro and in vivo experiments.
  • Willingness to work with laboratory mice as well as mouse and human tissues and/or cells.
  • Experience handling, breeding, and genotyping laboratory mice.
  • Experience with immunology research.
  • Experience with in vivo murine model systems.
  • Experience with flow cytometry panel design, acquisition, and analysis.
  • Experience with microscopy acquisition and analysis.
  • Experience with molecular, biochemical, cell biology techniques.
  • Knowledge of programming in R.

Intermediate Laboratory Services

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in biology, molecular biology, chemistry, genetics or related field
    • A combination of education and related technical/paraprofessional experience may be substituted for the bachelor’s degree on a year for year basis
  • One (1) year professional level research experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in biology, molecular biology, chemistry, genetics or related field
  • Two (2) years of experience in an experimental or wet laboratory
  • Interest in collaboratively managing a complex mouse colony, performing lab maintenance duties, and executing in vitro and in vivo experiments.
  • Willingness to work with laboratory mice as well as mouse and human tissues and/or cells.
  • Experience handling, breeding, and genotyping laboratory mice.
  • Experience with immunology research.
  • Experience with in vivo murine model systems.
  • Experience with flow cytometry panel design, acquisition, and analysis.
  • Experience with microscopy acquisition and analysis.
  • Experience with molecular, biochemical, cell biology techniques.
  • Knowledge of programming in R.

Salary and Benefits

The salary range for this position has been established at:

Entry-level Professional $40,280 to $51,236

Intermediate-level Professional $43,834 to $55,757

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.

The above salary range (or hiring range ) represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

This position is not eligible for overtime compensation.
