The Comprehensive Cancer Center is looking to fill the position of Research Technician 3 in the laboratory of Dr. Carbone.  As the director of the James Thoracic Center, Dr. Carbone has a research lab and mentors’ multiple PI’s.  He also participates in many collaborative research and clinical projects. Together we make up the Thoracic Oncology Research Collaborative Hub (TORCH).  Our group focuses on lung cancer research and translational therapeutics, including immunotherapies.

 

This position will provide support to senior lab members that support the Carbone lab specifically, and TORCH more broadly.  As a result, this individual can be assigned to multiple projects as needed.  As we are ever growing collaborative group, there is also a need for the individual to support lab organization.

 

The wet lab setting incorporates both basic biological and translational techniques.

·         Performing and assisting with a variety of molecular biology techniques, including protein/DNA/RNA isolations, Western blots, PCR techniques, bacterial cloning etc. 

·         Preparing samples for flow cytometry and cell sorting, including spectral flow cytometry 

·         Performing a large variety of cell culture techniques, including primary cell culture, generating new cell lines, and processing tissue (human and murine) into single cell suspensions 

·         Monitoring animal health

·         Performing a variety of procedures on mice, including injections, bleeding, oral gavage, weighing, handling, ear tagging, ear punching, and euthanasia 

·         Processing a variety of mouse tissues and blood samples for downstream analysis 

·         Processing human blood samples and isolating human immune cell subtypes. 

 

Responsibilities in addition to wet lab techniques.

·         Records, consolidates, and assists with analysis of research results.

·         Assists in evaluating validity of data obtained from experimental procedures by performing data analysis and other statistical techniques on sample data.

·         Summarizes data for inclusion in grant proposals and manuscripts, assisting with writing and figure generation for manuscripts at the direction of the supervisor. 

·         Prepares research progress reports; assists senior lab members and principal investigator(s) with the preparation of publications, manuscripts, articles, posters, and abstracts.

·         May need to independently review relevant scientific literature to ensure protocols are up to date and to troubleshoot procedures.

·         Take part in maintaining the laboratory through identified laboratory procedures and practices.

·         Sets up and operates laboratory equipment as well as routine cleaning and maintenance.

·         Participate in lab meetings and journal clubs.

·         Assists with training of junior research staff, and undergraduate and graduate students in research methods and equipment operation.

·         Monitors general supply inventories and initiates procurement requests as needed.

·         Assists Lab Supervisor with organization of the lab; creating and maintaining electronic inventories of reagents (i.e. antibodies, enzymes, etc.), equipment information, and other tasks as determined.

 

Preferred Qualifications 

·         Ability to work well within a team environment.  

·         Self-motivated, and good time management skills 

·         Strong organizational skills and proficiency with Microsoft Office 365 (excel, word etc.)

·         Previous experience in research or a lab environment is preferred, but not required. 

 

Required Qualifications

·         Bachelor’s degree in a biological, health or other related science field or equivalent experience required. Requires successful completion of a background check; qualified candidates may be asked to complete a pre-employment physical including a drug screen.

Target hiring range for this position: $17.10-$22.61 per hour
