Position Summary

The Research Senior Associate will report to the Center of Microbiome Science (CoMS) director but work in a broadly collaborative team that comprises the OSU Microbiome Platform staff including additional CoMS data analysts and Infectious Diseases Institute Genomic Sequencing and Microbiology Services senior staff. The candidate will apply cutting-edge informatics approaches, with a focus on metabolism and mechanism, to study microbes, viruses, and/or virus-microbe interactions in the oceans, soils, animals and/or humans in service and/or collaboration with OSU researchers utilizing the OSU Microbiome Platform.

Job Duties

The CoMS data analyst and microbiome science concierge will initially evaluate opportunities for improving metabolism-related microbiome workflows and recommend improvements that other CoMS staff could implement (if needed). Once established, the successful candidate will liase with faculty and researchers across the university (with an emphasis on the College of Medicine) to perform the following duties: provide basic background in what the microbiome platform offerings are; assess and help scope the client’s driving research Qs; identify sampling/analytical research and development (R&D) that is not yet mature from the literature that may be best performed via the microbiome platform (if supported); work with clients to develop protocols and/or manuscripts related to benchmarking studies for R&D as determined by leadership; liase with other CoMS data analysts to effectively communicate experimental and informatic workflows as they are updated; assist faculty teams on diverse microbiome science projects by providing ‘core’ and ‘custom’ bioinformatic deliverables in predominantly collaborative interactions leading to co-authorship opportunities in some of the most cutting-edge microbiome science at Ohio State; influence bioinformatic deliverables through collaborations; utilize skills and capabilities to expand the position in myriad ways as Ohio State positions itself in microbiome science, biosurveillance, and diverse industrial partnerships. Additionally, the successful candidate may have opportunities to participate in CoMS grant writing and strategic planning as needed.

Work Experience Required

Four - five years of experience in genome-resolved microbial sequence analysis, statistics, and microbiology/virology; experience working with large-scale datasets using Linux/Unix, high-performance computing, and open-source scripts; superb communications skills and well-developed interpersonal skills.

Work Experience Desired

Five - seven years of experience in genome-resolved microbial sequence analysis, statistics, and microbiology/virology with focus on metabolism; excellent attention to detail and organizational skills; public speaking and presentation competence; grant writing experience.

Education Required

Master’s degree in a relevant microbiology or computational biology area or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Education Desired

PhD in a relevant microbiology or computational biology area.
