ORGANIZATIONAL SUMMARY:
The Department of Molecular Pharmacology and Physiology supports the vision and goals of USF Health and the College of Medicine. The department consists of 30 faculty members, numerous postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, scientific/research staff, and a large team of administrative staff. Our researchers have expertise in systems physiology, cardiovascular diseases, respiratory dysfunction, metabolic/kidney disease, neurophysiology and neurodegenerative disorders. The goal of our research programs is to translate studies that decipher mechanisms of diseases or discover novel diagnostic/therapeutic targets into improved health care.
POSITION SUMMARY:
A Research Scientist performs a variety of lab and/or field experiments which require competency with standard scientific techniques and equipment in disciplines such as molecular biology, microbiology, genomics, physiology, and pathology/microscopy. Work requires practical and basic theoretical knowledge to perform these techniques and to modify them as needed, in consultation with the principal investigator or designee. Competency in standard methods of analysis of the results is expected.  Provides data or figures of publication quality for manuscripts or grants. This position is grand funded.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Performs standard laboratory procedures such as maintaining cell cultures requiring the use of sterile technique, staining and microscopy techniques, and performing routine assays for protein, RNA, DNA, or other cellular components.
Cares for laboratory animals. Performs standardized experimental protocols. May prepare animals for surgery, and care for animals after surgery. Keeps records of the conduct and outcome of laboratory analyses. May enter data into a database.
Manages the laboratory with duties including compliance, purchasing, and quality control. Monitors the work of student assistants.
Prepares narratives, graphs, graphs, charts, and tables from experimental results for inclusion in grants, presentations and publications.
Performs other duties as assigned.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:
MINIMUM:
Bachelor's degree in a natural, physical or medical science.
PREFERRED:
Competent with wet lab equipment, cell culture, techniques, animal handling and experiments, and cardiovascular and/or electrophysiology research experience.
SPECIAL SKILLS/TRAINING:
Knowledge of cardiac electrophysiology and function.
