Job Summary

A Research Scientist position is immediately available in the laboratory of Xuewei Wang in the Department of Molecular Medicine and Neuroscience Institute at University of South Florida Morsani College of Medicine in Tampa. The lab uses mouse genetics, mammalian cell culture, single-cell and bulk multiomics sequencing, advanced microscopy, etc. to study the mechanisms of axon regeneration and neuroprotection using neural injury and neurodegenerative disease models. Prior experience with mouse colony breeding and management, rodent surgery, molecular biology experiments, cell culture, histology, or fluorescence microscopy is preferred.

Nature of Work

The Research Scientist will perform technical laboratory duties and related data analysis in support of ongoing research projects. The position may also involve learning sophisticated techniques and skillsets or modifying existing experimental protocols as required for the projects and maintaining equipment and training new lab members. In addition, the Research Scientist will also play a major role in ordering, inventory management, and general organization of the laboratory space. A successful candidate is expected to work well in a collegial environment and interact efficiently with other lab members.


Examples of Duties/Areas of Responsibilities

The following list provides examples of the most typical duties and responsibilities for this position class. The current position may not include all of the examples listed, nor does the list include all of the work that may be assigned to this position.

  • Performs routine techniques, such as primary cell culture, PCR, immunoblotting, immunohistochemistry, RNAScope in situ hybridization, fluorescence microscopy, etc. Collects and analyzes data.
  • Oversees and maintains mouse colony and coordinates genotyping.
  • Performs mouse surgery. Monitors and cares post-operative mice.
  • Trains new lab members.
  • Orders supplies and equipment, manages inventory, and maintains and calibrates equipment.

QUALIFICATIONS (Education & Experience):

Minimum Qualifications:

This position requires a bachelor’s degree in a natural, physical or medical science.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • One year or more of wet-lab research experience.
  • Experience with mouse colony breeding and management, rodent surgery, molecular biology experiments, cell culture, histology, or fluorescence microscopy.
