POSITION SUMMARY:
The biological scientist will perform a variety of laboratory analysis that require familiarity with standard scientific techniques and equipment in the disciplines of analytical chemistry, molecular biology, and genomics. The biological scientist will also perform DNA/RNA library preparations/sequencing for microbiome and genomics studies along with complex cell culture experiments.
RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Conduct bench works: Performs and modifies laboratory tests on biologic materials such as tissues culture & cells lines with sterile technique, radioisotope labeling, preparing slides using staining techniques, extraction and purification of protein, DNA/RNA with subsequent high output sequencing, ELISA, flow cytometry, Magpix, extraction of metabolites, cytokine measurement, maintaining and passing cell cultures.
  • Maintains and organizes samples: for a clinical study with longitudinal sample collections (stool, urine, serum) along with samples generated from cell tissue cultures. Creates and maintains a sample database.
  • Maintains daily logs and records of laboratory techniques, observations, findings and results. Enters data into a database. Assists with ensuring lab is organized and equipped with necessary supplies and the sending/receiving of specimen shipments.
  • Instruct students/fellows: There will be undergraduate and graduate students working in the lab who require supervising and assistance.
  • Manuscript preparation: contributes to the methods section with description of laboratory techniques and prepares graphs, charts and tables from experimental results.
  • Orders laboratory equipment, calibrates instruments, and prepares laboratory equipment for use. Performs other duties as assigned.


POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:
MINIMUM:

  • This position requires a Bachelor's degree in a natural, physical or medical science. Four years of direct experience can substitute for Bachelor's Degree (SB 1310).

PREFERRED:

  • Sterile techniques in cell tissue culturing, genomics related laboratory techniques/knowledge (RNA/DNA extraction and library prep/sequencing).

OTHER:

  • Ability to learn new techniques and scientific concepts.
