Position Information


Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
College of Arts and Sciences in nearly 40 years. Including the Chapel Hill Analytical and Nanofabrication Laboratory (CHANL) and the graduate program in material sciences, Applied Physical Sciences has united numerous scientific entities on campus to further its mission of finding interdisciplinary solutions to real-world problems. Its newest endeavor, BeAM (Be A Maker), is a university-wide initiative that incorporates Making into research, education, and entrepreneurship. BeAM is comprised of several spaces, including a makerspace in Hanes Art Center, Carmichael Residence Hall, and a 3,400 square foot Makerspace in Murray Hall, all of which serve the entire UNC community.
Position Summary
The Research Scientist will perform work within one of the facilities and laboratories of the Department of Applied Physical Sciences. Job duties include design and execution of peptide synthesis, organic synthesis, high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) purification, mass spectrometry and other related laboratory duties, managing and operating the peptide synthesis facility, assisting in the development and execution of workshops and trainings for users, mentoring students, and participating in outreach activities.
This position may also provide opportunities for lectures on cell biology and synthesis, accomplished through a secondary faculty appointment.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required (or foreign degree equivalent); for candidates demonstrating comparable independent research productivity, will accept a relevant Bachelor’s degree (or foreign degree equivalent) and 3 or more years of relevant experience in substitution. May require terminal degree and licensure.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Ability to troubleshoot lab instruments, work independently and in teams, present information concisely, multi-task and set priorities to meet deadlines, work with a diverse group of people
Organized, detail-oriented, and self-motivated, with excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
PhD in Organic Chemistry and relevant experience in the field of solid-phase peptide synthesis, at least one year of experience in operating and maintaining high performance liquid chromatography instrumentation, and experience in providing technical training, supervision, and mentoring.
Proficiency in Manual and automated peptide synthesis; Analytical and preparatory high-performance liquid chromatography; Mass Spectrometry including LCMS; Rotary Evaporation; Lyophilization; Organic synthesis
Willingness to take on a wide variety of roles.
