The UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy ( is one of six health science schools (Pharmacy, Nursing, Dentistry, Social Work, Public Health, Medicine) at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and is one of the oldest health science academic programs at Chapel Hill. Position Summary
The Research Scientist will perform in the Zhang lab in the Division of Chemical Biology and Medicinal Chemistry at UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy, uses interdisciplinary approaches to study how lipid metabolism organizes and regulates membrane signaling, and use the insights to develop chemical probes and technologies targeting lipid modifying enzymes as novel diagnostic and therapeutic options. The Research Scientist will perform high-throughput screens and target-based ligand design to develop small molecule modulators for key metabolizing enzymes in lipid signaling pathways with guidance from Dr. Qisheng Zhang. The position holder is also expected to get involved in developing methods to identify new therapeuticl targets for cancer and neurodegenerative diseases. The Research Scientist will support grant and publication submissions by contributing experimental data and writing key sections, and present work locally and at scientific conferences.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required (or foreign degree equivalent); for candidates demonstrating comparable independent research productivity, will accept a relevant Bachelor’s degree (or foreign degree equivalent) and 3 or more years of relevant experience in substitution. May require terminal degree and licensure.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
* PhD degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Chemical Biology, or a related field.
* At least four (4) years of postdoctoral experience in lipid biochemistry and assay development for
high-throughput screening.
* Ability to work independently and creatively.
* Ability to clearly convey, both verbally and in writing, information and ideas to individuals and groups.
* Extensive experience working in a laboratory environment, particularly at the interface of chemistry and biology.
