Job Description Summary:
The University of Kansas School of Medicine – Wichita is seeking a Research Scientist with academic experience to help lead and expand our clinical research program. Candidate will work within the Surgery department focusing on clinical and translational research, particularly studies addressing the adoption of best medical practices. The research scientist will help faculty and residents meet ACGME accreditation requirements in research and scholarly activity through a comprehensive and rigorous program of research instruction and design, grants, study completion, publications, and scientific presentations. Collaboration with other clinical departments and outside institutions in multi-center studies will be expected. Rank dependent on qualifications.

Required Qualifications:
  • Doctoral degree (Ph.D.)
  • Five years’ experience or training in human subject research

Job Duties Outlined:

  • Collaborates to design, fund, conduct, evaluate and report on research projects.
  • Secures grants and funding for research and is responsible for controlling budgets.
  • Ensures research activities comply with applicable ethical, legal, regulatory and funding requirements.
  • Serves in a mentorship, supervisory and/or consultative capacity to students and staff. Maintains current knowledge of healthcare research-related issues, trends and scientific developments. Attend departmental scientific sessions, including quality improvement (M&M) conferences, research conferences and symposia, and journal clubs.
  • Coordinates research projects of faculty, residents and staff in the residency program to ensure ACGME research requirements are met; this includes study design, IRB submission, data collection and analysis, presentation and scientific meetings (both poster and computer based) and manuscript preparation. Maintains a data base of resident and faculty research for RRC review purposes. In addition, this position requires working with affiliate hospital staffs to develop cooperative projects to benefit the residency and the institutions, including quality initiatives.
  • Provides didactic materials on research methodology and human subject research requirements to graduate medical education faculty, residents and other professional groups.
  • Directs research manuscript preparation for graduate medical education programs and other publications.
