Medicine | School Biomedical Sciences Cancer Biology and Genetics

The Research Scientist will function as an expert and resource in cancer genetics research within the Comprehensive Cancer Center by conceptualizing, designing, implementing, evaluating, and directing research with regard to cancer and genome editing, including, but not limited to, basic and advanced molecular biology techniques.


Responsibilities Include:

  • Develops, adopts and implements new laboratory methods

  • Develops hypothesis and experimental approach to hypothesis testing

  • Participates as a team member in conference with researchers to interpret data and discuss project progress

  • Collaborates with other researchers in determining research priorities and planning programs of research

  • Develops, writes and submits grant proposals of original research as principal investigator to extramural funding agencies to obtain significant salary and research support from outside funding agencies

  • Administers grants

  • Directs and manages grant budgets

  • Troubleshoots problems

  • Advises staff and researchers on new technology and trends in molecular biology

  • Develops and conducts educational workshops, lectures and seminars

  • Manages and oversees the selection and design of research methodologies used for data analysis and establishes procedures

  • Performs research for new methods and makes recommendations regarding research procedures

  • Keeps up to date with relevant published literature

  • Develops and writes research manuscripts, articles, and abstracts

  • Writes project reports

  • Presents ongoing work and findings at academic and international conferences

  • Supervises graduate students and other members of staff

  • Trains junior investigators, post doctoral researchers, graduate students and technicians within laboratory.

Education/Experience Requirements: 

  • Doctorate (Professional) or equivalent combination of education and experience is required

  • Clinical research and/or laboratory experience required

  • Project management experience desired

  • Experience working with diverse groups of professional personnel in a complex, matrix environment is desired

  • Requires successful completion of a background check

  • Selected candidate may be asked to complete a pre-employment physical including a drug screen.

  • Demonstrated ability to be a competent and productive researcher i.e. incumbent will have authored several publications of considerable interest and value to the field as evidenced by favorable reviews, by citation in the work of others, by presentations of papers to professional societies, and/or will have contributed inventions, new designs, or techniques which are of material significance in the solution of important applied problems.

Salary Range: $62,700 - $83,600
