Job Summary

The Peredo Lab at the Thomas H. Gosnell School of Life Sciences at the Rochester Institute of Technology is seeking a Research Scientist to contribute to the research that aims to develop biotechnological methods for in plants that have completed the transition from terrestrial to aquatic environments. Our lab philosophy is to use a comparative approach and a variety of molecular, biotechnological, and computational tools to understand the genetic basis of adaptive traits.
The position is available immediately and involves the development of efficient transfection methods and protocols in non-conventional plants. In addition to troubleshooting methods and quantifying effectiveness, the Research Scientist will also be in charge of designing expression vectors and analyzing expression patterns.
The position is based in Dr. Peredo lab at RIT and will involve collaboration with Dr. Mirta Teichberg at the Marine Biological Laboratory, as well as researchers at other institutions, offering excellent opportunities for career development.


Job Responsibilities

Typical Functions

  • Independently performs components of a research program as directed by a senior member of the research team.
  • Exercise broad judgment and independence to substantially assist faculty or senior researchers in research project planning; research design; development of novel methods, techniques, processes, technologies, products; model development; overall data management; documentation and maintenance of tools, software, and method procedures; and advanced qualitative or quantitative analysis culminating in significant and original research interpretation.
  • Presentation of research projects which may include authoring papers, manuscripts, publications, technical white papers.
  • Collaborates with internal and external stakeholders.
  • May plan and lead small research components of existing research projects; learns methods for project planning, including assessment of cost, scope, and schedule against plan.
  • May mentor and supervise research support staff and students.
  • May assist with managing research laboratories.

Required Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Biology, or related field.
  • Background in Biology, Molecular Biology, Biotechnology, or related field

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Demonstrates the ability to independently plan and execute research.
  • Proficient with culturing methods.
  • Deep understanding of transfection methodology and ability to troubleshoot protocols.
  • Proficiency with microscopic tools.
  • Proficiency in using state-of-the-art molecular biology tools.
  • Demonstrated experience in genomic and gene expression analysis and vector design.
  • Demonstrates potential for original or collaborative scholarship.
  • Excellent teamwork and communication skills.
  • Excellent time management skills.
  • Evidence of leadership in project management.
  • Knowledge of research methods and analytical procedures.
  • Scientific writing skills demonstrated through peer-reviewed publications.
  • Knowledge of publishing/reporting requirements.
  • Ability to communicate findings and effectively work with sponsors and/or stakeholders.
  • Strong interpersonal and mentoring skills.

Department/College Description

The Thomas H. Gosnell School of Life Sciences (GSoLS ) comprises 27 full-time Faculty, 6 full-time staff and approximately 300 full-time students across our undergraduate majors of Biology, Biotechnology and Molecular Bioscience, Bioinformatics and Computational Biology, and Environmental Science; and  approximately 50 graduate students in our two Masters programs in Bioinformatics and Environmental Science. GSoLS is known for high-quality education, innovative approaches to teaching and learning, and excellent research and expertise in target areas including bioinformatics, computational biology, earth system and environmental science, biotechnology and STEM education.
