Research Scientist in Chemistry

The Department of Chemistry at the University of Virginia invites applications for a Research Scientist, who is excited about the opportunity to work in a dynamic and collaborative research environment. The successful candidate will become the lab manager of Dr. Jill Venton’s lab, managing research and personnel in the lab.   

This position will perform research in electrochemical detection of neurotransmitters in the brain.  They will use voltammetry and optogenetics as the latest tools of neuroscience research.  The will manage graduate students and undergraduate students to help them obtain their research goals.  They will also maintain safety and lab protocols and write research publications and grants for the lab.  The candidate will conduct their own research and also perform common management jobs needed to successfully maintain the lab.

QUALIFCATION REQUIRMENTS: Candidates must have received their PhD in chemistry, neuroscience, or a related field by the appointment start date.  Candidates must also have at least 2 years of postdoctoral research experience.  Candidates must have a working knowledge of either electrochemistry, in vivo neuroscience/neuromodulation, or fruit fly biology.  The candidate must also have strong leadership skills in being able to manage personnel in the lab and project management skills to manage multiple projects at once.  Candidates are expected to help lab members write grants and proposals, so good communication skills are required. They are expected to maintain a safe lab culture, write research papers and grants, and help mentor undergraduates and graduate students in the laboratory.
