Position Highlights

The Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology at the University of Arizona is looking for a successful candidate to work with Dr. Buchan as a Research Scientist III.

The candidate will collaborate with Dr Buchan to advance key research programs within the lab. Specifically, the candidate will be expected to manage their own independent research project(s), design experiments, analyze data, and play a leading role in the writing of scientific manuscripts (including research articles, reviews and technical manuscripts), as well as presenting data at scientific conferences. The candidate will also be expected to act as a mentor for less experienced lab mentors including graduate and undergraduate students. The candidate must be a skilled wet-lab bench scientist, ideally with a track record of expertise in biochemistry, mass spectrometry, CRISPR gene editing, flow cytometry and RNA-seq based technologies. Experience with human cell culture and iPSC models is also desirable.

Duties & Responsibilities

Primary duties:

Conduct their own independent research project, design experiments, and analyze data.

Stay abreast of the scientific literature in their field, to inform research project direction.

Prepare and participate in activities that communicate research findings including presentations at conferences, as well as writing articles for peer-reviewed journals.

Maintain an accurate electronic lab notebook, and ensure suitable storage of all critical experimental lab data.

Mentor and support student lab members

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Highly self-motivated, intellectual curiosity, strong sense of initiative, a good work ethic, creative thinking, problem solving skills and the ability to work independently (following suitable training) are highly desired.
Excellent interpersonal skills with an ability to work well with others in a collaborative and creative work environment.
Excellent organizational skills.
Excellent communication skills (written/oral).

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent advanced learning attained through professional level experience required.
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant work experience is required.
  • Track record of prior publication(s) in a quality journal as a first author.
Preferred Qualifications
  • MA or PhD
  • General Biochemistry expertise (e.g. various purification methods, in vitro systems).
  • RNA-sequencing library prep experience, ideally across various seq methods (e.g. RNA-seq, PRO-seq, ChIP-seq).
  • Mass spectrometry and Flow cytometry experience.
  • Experience in human and IPSC cell culture models.
