Required Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree and 5 years of related experience


Preferred Qualifications:
M.S. degree in plant pathology or closely related discipline
Broad-based experience in diagnostics, plant pathogen detection, and identification.
Expertise in microbiology with relevant laboratory experience in plant diagnostics, plant pathogen detection and identification.
Proficiency in molecular biology, mycology, bacteriology, and serological techniques.
Practical experience in seed health testing. 
Experience in the planning and design of experiments.
Knowledge of seed pathology, transmission of plant pathogens, emerging diseases and plant pathogens of phytosanitary importance. 


Job Description:

The Iowa State University Seed Science Center is seeking applicants for a Research Scientist III position to support molecular seed quality assurance as a component of the Center’s operation of the National Seed Health System (NSHS). The main focus of the position is to design, standardize, and validate seed health testing protocols. The position requires considerable technical expertise, the ability to make plans and decisions that require good judgment, and the ability to respond to new or emerging disease issues.

Example of Duties :

  • Conducts protocol development and optimization of seed health testing methods.

  • Designs, organizes, and carries out validation studies for seed health testing methods.

  • Designs, organizes, and carries out NSHS proficiency testing program.

  • Participates in teaching and training on seed health testing.

  • Represents NSHS with stakeholder groups such as the Int. Seed Health Initiative.

  • Manages laboratory operations, including training and supervision of 1-2 student laboratory assistants.

  • Formulates research methods and suggests options for improving quality, identifies potential problems, recommends and implements solutions.

  • Conducts analysis of data, interprets and implements research methodology based on the outcome of analysis.

This is a two-year term position with opportunity for renewal.

• Responds to complicated inquiries, provides training, and provides direction to lower-level staff
• May provide supervision for one to two other staff (i.e., leads a small work team)
• May lead projects for which well-defined practices and procedures may not exist
• Provides guidance to students
