Purpose

This position centers on sample preparation, processing and performing electron microscopy on samples for research projects across the Medical College of Wisconsin Campus. This position also entails responsibility for management, maintenance of hardware within the Core Facility. This position holds expectation to train in the efficient use of the microscopes and ancillary equipment, as well as instrumentation for sample preparation. The expectation is that this individual would contribute to the implementation of new experimental methods in microscopy and sample preparation, and would participate in the organization and maintenance of the Core Facility infrastructure.

Primary Functions

  • Possess knowledge and expertise in electron and high-resolution imaging techniques. This will permit advise of clients and users regarding the best options for their electron microscopy work to achieve their desired goals.
  • Process tissue and other samples by a wide range of techniques and prepare specimens for microscopic observation. This should include but not be limited to prepare and examine specimen by semi-thin and ultrathin-sectioning, section staining; negative staining; high pressure freezing; freeze substitution; immune-electron microscopy; viewing and recording digital images of specimens in the electron microscope.
  • Oversee maintenance and care of the microscopes and associated equipment, troubleshoot problems and assure instrument integrity by arranging regular maintenance service.
  • Responsible for reporting accurate findings, including evaluating findings for scientific and clinical significance and validity, and for recognition of atypical/abnormal findings requiring additional follow up.
  • Works with scientists and clinicians to increase knowledge of findings to improve upon final reporting and diagnosis.
  • Oversee ensuring quality control is acceptable, instrumentation is functioning and maintained within defined tolerance limits and documentation is complete.
  • Performs CLIA level validation of new procedures and protocols.
  • Ensure the Facility complies with CAP regulations for bi-Annual CAP inspection readiness. 
  • Prepare solutions and chemicals as required for the fulfillment of research requests.
  • Oversee the maintenance of image databases, clear records and exact locations of specimens, image files, reports, procedure and quality controls.
  • Ensure correct and timely billing for EM services to all clients.
  • Oversee ordering of supplies; ensure lab safety; laboratory organization; coordinate scientific requests from clients.
  • Teach, train and /or mentor new employees, students, and other health Facility clients.

Knowledge – Skills – Abilities

Knowledge of biology, chemistry, mathematics, documentation, and records management. Data utilization, complex problem solving, critical thinking, resource management, and writing skills.

Preferred Schedule:
Monday - Friday 8:00-5:00

Position Requirements:

Minimum Required Education:               PhD in a scientific field

Minimum Required Experience:             3 years

Preferred Experience:                      Prior progressive experience in electron microscopy and high-resolution imaging preferred
