HJF is seeking a Research Scientist I, II, or III (Computational Bioinformatics) to support the Biotechnology High Performance Computing Software Applications Institute (BHSAI) located in Frederick, MD. HJF provides scientific, technical and programmatic support services to BHSAI.

The mission of the BHSAI is to perform interdisciplinary research, combining physical, computational, and life-science research to improve the efficiency and efficacy in the development of militarily relevant medical products for Force Health Protection.

Responsibilities:

  • Support data-mining and machine learning activities through the design and delivery of novel algorithms, tools, and techniques using protein structure, immunology, genomic, transcriptomic, and chemical/biological screening assay data.
  • Perform expert informatics research in human diseases and establish scientific hypotheses that can be addressed using computational methods.
  • Design and lead the implementation of antibody prediction and classification using protein structure prediction and repertoire B-cell sequencing data.
  • Provide expert advice on computational chemistry/biology tools, machine learning, experimental design, data analysis, and data interpretation.
  • Work simultaneously on multiple projects, involving a diverse and interdisciplinary team of scientists across multiple laboratories.
  • Prepares research proposals, progress reports, and manuscripts for submission to scientific journals.
  • May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor. This may include attendance of and participation in required training for role.
  • Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

    • Should also have extensive computational experience and a strong publication record.
    • Proven track-record of publishing relevant bioinformatics or systems biology results in peer-reviewed journals.
    • Solid knowledge of informatics tools and visualization/data mining packages and a proven aptitude for optimally adapting them to specific problems.
    • Proven computational experience is a must.
    • Excellent writing and oral communication skills.
    • Proficiency in common database/programming/scripting languages (e.g., SQL, R, Python, Perl, Java, MATLAB, C++) and their application in biomedical research.
    • First-hand experience in analyzing and interpreting large and complex data sets and a familiarity with common data types.
    • Direct experience in the development and implementation of large-scale biological databases and user-friendly interactive web-based interfaces.
    • Working knowledge of biostatistics including significance testing, power analysis, and boot-strapping methods.
    • Demonstrated scientific knowledge of cell biology, molecular biology, and/or immunology.

    Minimum Education: Doctoral degree in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, or closely related field is required.

    Minimum Experience/ Training Requirements:

    • Level I: 2-5 years of relevant work experience required.
    • Level II: 5-8 years of relevant work experience required.
    • Level III: 8-10 years of relevant work experience required.

    Work Environment: Set in a laboratory work environment.

    Background/Security: Must have lived in the U.S. 3 out of the past 5 years; eligible to obtain and maintain a Tier I investigation/ Public Trust and a Common Access Card (CAC).

    Telework/Remote: May have the option to telework one to two days per week.
