This essential research position manages complex scientific data for projects at the University of Idaho, primarily focused on the NSF-fundedIdaho Community-engaged Resilience for Energy-Water Systems (I-CREWS) project. I-CREWS is a groundbreaking 5-year, $20 million award seeking to address the impact of climate, population, and technological change on energy-water (E-W) systems. This position will develop an understanding of the statewide I-CREWSdata ecosystem”, will develop ties with data sources at the county, state, tribal and federal levels, and will create innovative data platforms. This position reports to the Director of Research Computing and Data Services (RCDS) within the Institute for Interdisciplinary Data Sciences (IIDS).
Position Overview
Serves as an independent researcher, or a collaborator on a multi-scholar research initiative. May have lead responsibility for discrete components of a larger project under the general direction of a senior or principal researcher.
Duties may include:
  • Performing complex scientific analyses
  • Adjusting experimental designs as necessary based on experimental data analysis
  • Directing the development of recommendations for project solutions.
  • Performing peer review of scientific projects, studies, or applications and making recommendations
  • Preparing peer reviewed publications or presentations
  • Resolving complex project specific technical and regulatory issues
  • Establishing work priorities and performance standards, hiring, training, evaluating staff, assigning, and reviewing work
  • May be responsible for technical project management to include developing the scope of work, budgeting, scheduling, reporting, implementing field projects, and approving scientific documents.
  • Participating in the development of grant proposals as named project contributor
  • Other duties as assigned

Position Qualifications


Required Experience
  • Three years of research experience related to the domain of this position

Required Education
  • Doctoral Degree in Agriculture, Social Science, Natural Resources, or Life Sciences; A Master’s Degree plus an additional two years of research experience (five years total) may be substituted for a Ph.D

Required Other
  • Ability to travel as needed
Additional Preferred
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and with an interdisciplinary team
  • Experience serving as PI or Co-PI on extramurally funded research
  • Demonstrated experience working with qualitative social data in the forms of surveys, interviews, focus groups and stakeholder engagement
  • Prior experience translating qualitative data into quantitative frameworks, including modeling, machine learning, statistical analyses and visualization
  • Existing understanding of and experience with Idaho’s various data providers
  • Experience with or demonstrated ability to communicate with state, tribal and federal partners regarding data sovereignty, availability, access and sharing
  • UNIX operating systems, especially Linux
  • Experience with software configuration and versioning tools such as: Git/GitHub, Subversion, etc
  • Active membership in professional organizations related to research Data Management (e.g., ESIP)
  • Experience with the following technologies:
    • Scientific data repository software and services such as DKAN, DSpace, Esploro and DataCite.
    • Relational databases such as MySQL, PostgreSQL, Microsoft SQL Server
    • Experience with Esri GIS software, including ArcGIS and ArcGIS Online
    • Web Development with Drupal or similar Content Management System (CMS)
    • Proficiency in one or more of the following programming languages: Python, R, PHP, SQL
    • Scientific and Geospatial Metadata Standards (e.g., ISO-19115, FGDC, Dublin Core, EML, etc.)
    • Common geospatial web service Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) such as OPeNDAP, OAI-PMH, OGC WMS, WFS, WCS
    • JSON, XML, XSLT, and related tools
    • GIS systems (e.g., Esri ArcGIS, ArcGIS Online, QGIS, etc.)
