The Institute for Protein Design (IPD) at the University of Washington in Seattle is creating a new world of synthetic proteins to address 21st-century challenges in medicine, energy, and technology. The IPD is a unique interdisciplinary environment where world-class researchers with expertise in computing and software, biochemistry, genome sciences, biological structure, pharmacology, immunology and other basic science disciplines, as well as clinical medicine, work together to both computationally design and experimentally characterize novel biomolecules. Current projects include the design of novel therapeutics for cancer, neurological diseases, and more, as well as new vaccines, nanomaterials, and enzymes. The Department of Biochemistry - IPD has an outstanding opportunity for a Research Scientist/Engineer – Assistant.

In this lab-based role, the Research Scientist Assistant will work in a collaborative environment to perform cell line maintenance, cell-based assays, and ELISA assays.  This position will report to a Core Leader and will be part of a group that values data quality, high productivity, and teamwork.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Main duties will include:
• Tissue culture of mammalian cell lines at the BSL2 level.  Assistance with cell-based assays (reporter assays, killing assays, mixed lymphocyte reactions, ELISA, Luminex etc.) Assistance with multiparameter Flow cytometry (Phenotypic, functional assays, etc.) Data analysis and reporting with an emphasis on high quality data and quick turnaround. Author protocols and reports detailing experimental work and summarizing results.
• Candidate must have familiarity with office productivity software (Word, Powerpoint, Excel) to prepare research reports on the work performed.   Candidate must be familiar with BSL1 requirements, with demonstrated experience in aseptic technique preferred.  Candidate will assist graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, and research staff with maintaining multiple mammalian cell lines and execution of assays while following established protocols.
• Percentage of effort:
• Cell line maintenance and general BSL2 support – 70%
• Adherent cell line assay support – 20%
• ELISA assay assistance – 10%

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
• Bachelor's Degree in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Structural Biology, Cell Biology or related Life Sciences + less than 3 months of experience in related field.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
• Previous experience in a laboratory setting.
• General knowledge of immunology and cell biology techniques and analytics.

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

DESIRED:
• Previous experience with mammalian cell culture.
• Previous experience with cell-based and/or ELISA assays.
• Previous experience with Flow cytometry (Phenotypic, functional assays, etc.)
