Department of Medicine: Allergy and Infectious Diseases has an outstanding opportunity for a Research Scientist/Engineer 4.

Field of Research:
Perform and guide research pertaining to structure-based drug design. Assay bacterial, viral, and parasite proteins for x-ray crystallography, and biochemical assays. Member of the Seattle Structural Genomics Center for Infectious Disease, SSGCID.

Purpose of Research:
Lead a team of researchers working on scientific community nominated targets in a pipeline to clone, express, purify protein and help determine/ produce a X-ray crystal structure for use in new drug development.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Designing SOPs, establishing routine weekly lab duties, and assigning these duties to other lab members.  Establish weekly production goals for cloning, expression-testing, upscales and purifications.  Keep track of weekly production achievements and failures.  Coordinate/Contribute to the design and implementation of processes associated with a HT protein production pipeline. 40%
• Support and mentor junior lab members and student workers. 20%
• Coordinate UW cloning, expression-testing and protein production efforts with SCRI and U of Kansas. 15%
• Troubleshoot experimental and equipment problems. 10%
• Participate in SSGCID monthly SLT meetings. 5%
• Participate in SSGCID special focus meetings. Participate in conferences and programmatic meetings as requested.  5%
• Bioinformatics support for target selection. 5%

Supervisory Responsibilities:
Supervisor other Research Scientists and student workers with University of Washington Protein Production Group, UW-PPG

Stakeholders:
NIH funded Structural genomics Program Contract (5 yr) administered in the UW Department of Medicine, Division of Allergy and Infectious Disease, CERID

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

A Master's Degree in Molecular Biology or a related field and at least 4 years of experience

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

• High level of motivation.
• Ability to troubleshoot.
• Good organizational and communication skills and the ability to work as a member of a team is important.
• Mentor or leadership skills/experience.

DESIRED:

• Knowledgeable in molecular biology techniques such as DNA isolation/manipulation, PCR, real time PCR, thermal melts, sequencing, electrophoresis.
• Must have experience with High Throughput methods including 96-well format and multi-channel pipettes.
• Experience in development of biochemical enzyme assays.
• Good organizational skills and the ability to work lead a team of researchers and student assistants.
