The School of Medicine has an outstanding opportunity for Research Scientist Engineer 1 to join their team.

We are currently looking for a highly motivated scientist who is eager to gain new knowledge and capabilities and contribute to scientific publications to work in our fast-paced and collaborative research group. The position is an ideal stepping stone to graduate or professional school in areas of biology and medicine, as it provides scientific training, strong working relationships with senior faculty and staff scientists, and publication opportunities. The candidate will work under the supervision of senior scientists to conduct molecular microbiology research that explores novel ideas about the causes and persistence of human infectious disease and novel approaches to understand mechanisms of antibiotic resistance. The candidate will use clinical samples and bacterial cultures from clinical samples in combination with microbiological and genetic methods to characterize how therapies affect the bacteria. The candidate will engage and perfect skills in PCR, qPCR, ddPCR, DNA extraction, 16S sequencing, and bacterial whole genome sequencing, and also aid in processing of clinical samples including, culturing, species identification, bacterial phenotyping and genotyping. The candidate will work with an expert bioinformatician to analyze next-generation sequencing data. The desired candidate will be meticulous and have impeccable organizational skills, have well-rounded molecular, sequencing, and microbiological background, and be able to interpret and communicate results. The RSE-1 will use his/her laboratory and biosafety skills to work with investigators, technicians, and support personnel in assuring compliance with established laboratory practices, and to assist in drafting and updating Standard Operating Procedures for ongoing and new research protocols. Familiarity with a wide variety of laboratory equipment and techniques will be necessary in order to maximize the function of this shared laboratory.
