The Child Health and Mortality Prevention Surveillance network, or CHAMPS, is a multi-country network that conducts prospective community and healthcare center mortality surveillance in regions with disproportionately high burden of mortality in children aged <5 years. CHAMPS currently has ongoing surveillance activities at nine sites in South Africa, Mali, Mozambique, Kenya, Ethiopia, Bangladesh, Sierra Leone, Pakistan, and Nigeria. Malnutrition, both protein-energy malnutrition and micronutrient deficiencies, contribute to child mortality. The Assessing the Role of Malnutrition in CHAMPS (ARM-CHAMPS) sub-study aims to assess the role of malnutrition on child mortality and adverse pregnancy and birth outcomes.

 

JOB DESCRIPTION:

  • Develops biochemical and cell-based assays, with the use of such assays to perform high throughput screening of small molecule libraries.
  • Develops and executes lower throughput biochemical or cell-based assays for structural optimization of hit compounds.
  • Hands-on bench scientist.
  • Communicates with biomedical investigators and medicinal chemists.
  • May supervise staff.
  • Performs related responsibilities as required.

ADDITIONAL JOB DETAILS:

  • The Nutrition Research Scientist is responsible for managing and leading a wide array of nutrition data collection, data management, quality improvement, and analytical tasks for CHAMPS.

Primary duties include:

  • Serve as Study Director for ARM-CHAMPS study, including overall project management, including data collection, management, analysis, and reporting.
  • In partnership with CHAMPS leadership and scientific oversight team, develop and implement priority nutrition-related research questions for CHAMPS.
  • Monitor and evaluate nutrition-related data collected in CHAMPS MITS and pregnancy surveillance and provide timely feedback to sites for improvement in data quality.
  • Develop and present routine reporting on nutrition inputs and outcomes to donors, partners, and leadership.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree and 7 years of related experience or equivalent combination of experience, education and training.
  • Strong technical background.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • PhD in nutrition, epidemiology, or related fields with a strong background in data management and analysis.
  • Experience with managing complex data sets. 
  • Extensive experience working in global health in low resource communities in Africa and South Asia
  • Experience working with surveillance or research networks in globally or domestically.
  • Strong analytic and problem-solving skills
  • Experience publishing in peer-reviewed journals
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Experience working in teams and collaborating with team members.
  • Demonstrated experience using statistical software (e.g., R, SAS)
  • Experience with international travel in low resource communities
