Job Summary

The Biology and Biological Engineering Division at the California Institute of Technology seeks a highly motivated research scientist to assist with projects in virus engineering and technology development with the Gradinaru group (glab.caltech.edu) and the CLOVER center (clover.caltech.edu).

The ideal applicant will be skilled in general molecular biology and tissue culture, with experience in recombinant protein production, protein biochemistry method development, and lab automation, as well as being organized, hard-working, and have excellent communication skills. The candidate will be expected to work under the supervisor driving forward independent research projects and in support of a variety of projects within the lab.

The position is available immediately and the candidate should be available to start as soon as possible.

Essential Job Duties

  • Perform molecular cloning, recombinant protein production and purification using established and state-of-the-art techniques.
  • Preparation and titration of AAV viruses according to established protocols.
  • Perform histology and immunostaining.
  • Microscopy and image analysis.
  • Perform experiments, collect and assist with data analysis, and present data findings to the PI and Director.
  • Adapt methodology to fit research requirements and ensure that research timelines are kept on track.
  • Perform other related general lab duties as assigned.

Basic Qualifications

  • BS degree with 3-5 years of relevant scientific research experience.
  • Extensive hands-on experience with molecular and cellular biology.
  • Must have direct laboratory experience (academic or industry) with mammalian tissue culture, cell transfection and general sterile technique.
  • Familiarity and hands-on experience with the operation of standard lab equipment and with computer software for document generation and data analysis (e.g., Excel, GraphPad Prism, imageJ).
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to handle a variety of tasks simultaneously.
  • Ability to resolve technical problems and adapt easily to changing needs and priorities.
  • Must possess a high level of initiative and the ability to work with little supervision.

 Preferred Qualifications

  • Post-doctoral experience in biology or related field.
  • Experience working with recombinant viral vectors under BSL2 conditions.
  • Experience with immunohistochemistry, in situ hybridization, and microscopy.
  • Experience working lab automation.
  • Data analysis experience and demonstrable quantitative skills.
  • Ideal candidate is willing to commit for at least 2 years.
