Location: Seattle, WASHINGTON
Deadline: Open Until Filled

As a UW employee, you have a unique opportunity to change lives on our campuses, in our state and around the world. UW employees offer their boundless energy, creative problem solving skills and dedication to build stronger minds and a healthier world.

UW faculty and staff also enjoy outstanding benefits, professional growth opportunities and unique resources in an environment noted for diversity, intellectual excitement, artistic pursuits and natural beauty.

The Washington Ocean Acidification Center (WOAC), a member organization of EarthLab in the College of the Environment at the University of Washington (UW), invites applications for the WOAC Research Scientist 1 position. This is a full-time (100% FTE) appointment.

The Washington Ocean Acidification Center was established in 2013 following the recommendation of the Washington state Blue Ribbon Panel on Ocean Acidification. Although we are based in the University of Washington, we serve the entire state. Ocean acidification threatens our marine ecosystems and the people connected to them. WOAC aims to connect research decision makers to advance ocean acidification science, strategies and policies to restore the health of our oceans.

WOAC is a member of EarthLab. EarthLab is a visionary institute that pushes boundaries to address our most pressing environmental challenges, with a current focus on climate and its intersection with social justice. EarthLab does this by connecting the University of Washington (UW) to communities, businesses, non-profits, public agencies, Tribal nations and others to co-produce actionable research that generates solutions and strategies for local and global impact. EarthLab’s vision, an equitable, just and sustainable world where people and planet thrive, supports one of the University’s biggest goals. As a Carnegie-classified Community Engagement University, the UW aspires to be the #1 university in the world as measured by impact. EarthLab is inspired by and committed to this challenge.

EarthLab acknowledges the systemic racism that exists in the environmental field and is committed to creating a diverse and inclusive work environment for all our employees where all voices are considered and valued. Thus, we are seeking candidates whose experiences have prepared them to fulfill our commitment to equity and justice and have given them the confidence to fully engage audiences from a wide spectrum of backgrounds.

This position will provide scientific data management and analysis for oceanographic and biological research for the Washington Ocean Acidification Center. The Center produces large data sets to understand the spatial and temporal variation in key oceanographic variables, with the goal to elucidate drivers of change, such as the extent of ocean acidification, the role of local processes such as respiration, and the general suitability of local waters for shellfish growing.

This position will contribute to the WOAC goals by leading field work, specifically to staff as cruise leader, organizing ship cruises, at sea data collection (via CTD, oxygen sampling, plankton hauls), and processing and analyzing data. The position will instigate QA/AC procedures in accordance with published methods as outlined, and will facilitate coordination with other WOAC PIs, such as plankton and other biological efforts at UW and NOAA.  Other tasks require assisting with project administrative duties.

Under immediate supervision by Jan Newton, UW APL and School of Oceanography, this position will perform assigned tasks requiring application of scientific and standard computer applications. This includes oxygen and chlorophyll analyses and basic analytical processes with the ability to trouble-shoot and provide solutions to issues that arise.  This position will also observe equipment in the field, exercise the applicable methods, and independently determine the hierarchy of testing protocol.

As a UW employee, you will enjoy generous benefits and work/life programs. For a complete description of our benefits for this position, please visit our website, click here.
