The UW has an outstanding opportunity for a Research Scientist 1 - Strain Generation! The Department of Genome Sciences (GS) is part of the University of Washington School of Medicine (UW SoM) and is comprised of 27 labs addressing leading edge questions in biology and medicine by developing and applying genetic, genomic and computational approaches taking advantage of genomic information now available for a host of species. GS is making major contributions in the application of genome science to understand the fundamentals of biology and to improve human health and well-being. Genome Sciences is a collaborative department supported by very different academic disciplines. We work with a multitude of Program Investigators (PIs) in departments both on the UW campus as well as worldwide. The department has gone through significant expansion since its beginning in 2001 with annual grant awards of $68.5M in FY21. The department has 62 training, teaching, and research faculty.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Candidate will be part of a multi-person project. Responsibilities will be include a combination of the following:
• Creation of transgenic C. elgans lines through injection
• Evaluation of injected animals for expression and gene integration
• Creation of common stocks for protocols coordinating to ensure logistical continuity of experiments
• Enter sample metadata and expression data into lab database
• Additional Duties as allowed by work flow, opportunity, initiative or assignment
• Reporting results at biweekly group meetings general lab meetings and conference calls
• Researching additional ways to generate transgenic lines
• Keeping organized and accurate records
• This position requires that you work well with others, have good communication skills, feel comfortable presenting your work to others, and help train others in your area of expertise.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
• Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Biochemistry, Microbiology, or Chemistry AND at least 3 months related experience. Have an understanding of basic principles in genetics, molecular biology and developmental biology based on course work or experience. Experience in laboratory research.
• Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except where there are legal requirements such as license/certification/registration.
Desired Qualifications:
• Specific skills that will be useful in this work include:
• PCR, RNA-sequencing and molecular cloning
• Worm handling
• Microscopy
• Computer skills (familiarity with UNIX environments)
• Keeping organized files to track data
Working Conditions
• BSL1 laboratory
