The University of Virginia’s (UVA) School of Medicine, Department of Pediatrics , invites applications for the inaugural position of Research Program Scientific Director.

This role will play a pivotal part in establishing and executing a growth oriented research infrastructure, spanning basic science to translational research. We are seeking an innovative leader deeply committed to research, with exceptional project management skills, and a talent for fostering collaboration across diverse teams. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a proven track record in designing and implementing multifaceted research programs, securing funding, and catalyzing collaboration and innovation. Reporting directly to the Vice Chair for Research within the Department of Pediatrics, the Research Program Scientific Director will collaborate closely with the Chair, Chief Operating Officer, Research Program Financial Director, faculty, and stakeholders to shape the future of pediatric research at UVA.

The successful candidate will be expected to:

  • Collaborate with leaders to develop a comprehensive research strategy for the Department.

  • Work collaboratively to implement the Department's overarching research strategic vision.

  • Develop a recruitment strategy to enhance Departmental research by leveraging the strengths of new recruits, aiming to bolster Departmental NIH and other sponsored funding.

  • Establish and maintain mechanisms to reduce silos across the Department.

  • Work closely with the Vice Chair for Research and faculty to provide support during funding bridges, ensuring smooth coordination and assistance.

  • Oversee laboratory renovations in collaboration with divisional administrative resources.

  • Collaborate on efficient management of space allocations.

  • Ensure that diversity, equity, and inclusion considerations are integrated into hiring plans.

  • Contribute to the Department's social media presence related to its research mission.

  • Additionally, undertake other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Education: Master's degree or a Bachelor's degree with 10 years of experience.

  • Experience: At least seven years of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • PhD with at least five years of relevant experience.

This position will remain open until filled.  The University will perform background checks on all new hires prior to employment.  A completed pre-employment health screen is required for this position prior to employment.
