The Department of Agricultural and Human Sciences educates students in agriculture and youth, family, and community sciences, finds solutions to problems, and extends knowledge to create healthy communities for youth and families. We do this through academic programs in agricultural and extension education and youth, family, and community sciences that are offered at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
Essential Job Duties
The Research Scholar will conduct, manage, and develop applied sociological research and extension projects on farm stress and will act as the Applied Research Director for the Southern Ag Exchange Network (SAgE: University of Tenn-Knoxville), a Farm and Ranch Stress Assistance Network funded by the USDA’s National Institute for Food and Agriculture. This role involves the following responsibilities:
  • Manage, direct, and organize the SAgE inter-institutional applied research network that currently involves 9 universities, 1 community-based organization, and 1 independent contractor: manage, direct, and consult with SAgE partners on social science projects involving primary data collection and analysis, analysis of secondary data, GIS mapping, and asset mapping across farmer, rancher, farmworker, and professional populations in the SAgE region
  • Act as the Coordinating Editor for the SAgE Farm Stress Brief Series, a peer-reviewed extension publication housed at the University of Tennessee’s Institute of Agriculture: this includes the development of publications from SAgE team members, managing the peer review process, and providing editorial assistance for team members
  • Manage the SAgE Applied Research Webinar Series involving the scheduling of speakers, and Spanish-language interpreters, development of registration flyers, and communication with members of the SAgE Network
  • Coordinate with SAgE on web page content development and management, such as the development of a research directory that includes research tools and a data site for the dissemination of instruments.
  • Supervision and mentorship of undergraduate and graduate students at North Carolina State University and with partner institutions participating in the SAgE Fellows program
  • Collaborate with the SAgE Farmer Advisory Committee on oversight and feedback of network projects
  • Assist in the development of farmer-informed grants for asset mapping projects and GIS project workshops as applied research tools
  • Execute community-based asset mapping project with Operation Spring Plant involving workshops with farmers, qualitative data analysis, and validation of a research tool for resource directory construction
  • Coordinate with Dr. Schulman on the analysis of sociological qualitative data utilizing Dedoose and of quantitative data utilizing STATA to prepare manuscripts for publication based on data collected from 2021 to 2022 with Black and White small-scale farmers
  • Attendance at quarterly meetings in Knoxville, Tennessee with the main project team
  • Attendance at appropriate sociological society professional conferences

Qualifications


Minimum Education and Experience
  • Doctoral degree in sociology or social science-related field

OR
  • Relevant Master’s degree with at least 5 years of formal post-degree professional work experience.
  • Experience with social science data collection, organization, analysis (both quantitative and qualitative methods and data analysis techniques and computer software programs), and publishing peer-reviewed articles
Other Required Qualifications
  • Knowledge of and experience with evaluation research methods and analysis
  • Knowledge of rural sociological and sociology of agriculture literature on the structure of agriculture and rural development
  • Ability to manage and coordinate multi-disciplinary and inter-institutional teams on applied research projects
  • Collaboration with community-based organizations, especially those that are led by and work with farmers
  • Editorial management and experience with social science publications
  • Knowledge of budgets, grants, and contracting procedures in a University setting;
  • Capacity to mentor and work with social science undergraduate and graduate students
  • Driven, self-directed, and excellent time management
  • Ability to manage a project and maintain clear communication on project progress with supervisors
  • Excellent verbal and written communication
  • Organization skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to coordinate and manage multidisciplinary projects and teams with all clientele
  • Implementation of survey and interview social science data collection methods
  • Data collection, organization, analysis, and management skills
  • Ability to write and create reports and professional publications in sociology and social science outlets
  • Ability to utilize office equipment and other relevant technology (software and systems) to meet work needs, including Microsoft Office, Google Platforms, Zoom, Dedoose, etc.
  • Ability to develop and maintain productive collaborative work relationships with all clients (internal and external)
  • Ability to take direction and work independently on multiple projects
Preferred Qualifications
Experience In:
  • Completing large grant projects in the social sciences
  • Engaging community members and partners through research or other collaborations
  • Conducting qualitative and quantitative social science research
  • Using internal processes to prioritize workload
  • Record of publications in sociology and social science journals
Required License(s) or Certification(s)
  • A valid NC Driver’s License and the ability to obtain an NC Driver’s License within 60 days of hire.
  • A valid Driver’s License must be maintained throughout employment.
