The Department of Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) at the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) has an opportunity for a Research Safety Assistant. Under direct supervision, the Research Safety Assistant will assist with a wide range of research related activities to ensure a safe work environment and to achieve compliance with University’s environmental, health and safety standards and governmental regulatory requirements. This involves data collection, field work, evaluations, sample analysis, research and training. This position also provides assists with other EHS programs including Environmental Compliance, Occupational Safety and Health, Fire Safety, Hazardous Materials Management, Biosafety, and Radiation Safety.


The Department of Environmental Health and Safety is responsible for the design and implementation of programs to enhance safety at the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB). The department provides consultation and services to research laboratories, clinical areas, facilities, and offices in the areas of chemical, biological, and radioactive materials safety; occupational safety and industrial hygiene; fire safety; environmental and hazardous waste management; and workers compensation and insurance. The department’s offices are located in downtown Baltimore near the Inner Harbor area.

Essential Functions:

  • Inspects laboratories for compliance with chemical hygiene and biological safety standards and assists in developing recommendations for corrective action.
  • Assists in developing and presenting training programs such as Right to Know, bloodborne pathogens, and use and function of personal protective equipment.
  • Conducts routine radiation safety inspections for contamination and exposure assessments.
  • Evaluates and monitors the use of radioactive materials and radiation producing devices.
  • Conducts accident and incident investigations.
  • Participates in institutional response to emergency situations.
  • Assists in the preparation of mandatory federal and state reports on radiation dosimetry, radiation sources, and material inventory.
  • Assists in the preparation of mandatory federal and state reports such as annual reports and waste minimization reports.

Skills/Eligibility:

Qualifications

  Education:  Bachelor’s degree (preferred degree in life sciences, industrial hygiene, safety, environmental engineering, occupational health, health physics, chemistry, biology, or physics).
Other:  Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Ability to apply federal, state, and local environmental, hazardous waste, occupational safety and health, laboratory operations, laboratory safety, industrial hygiene, workplace safety program development, and life safety code requirements to a university environment. Ability to prepare technical reports and analyses and maintain required records; to learn and apply evaluation and survey techniques including the use of environmental sampling devices and analytical equipment; to establish and maintain effective working relationships with faculty, staff, and students; to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; to operate computers and other standard office equipment; to work in, on, around, under and over fixed equipment and machinery; to lift and transport assigned tools and equipment; to work in hazardous or irritating environments; to work with hazardous materials; to wear and work in personal protective equipment. Skill in auditing, investigations or other comparable analytical assignments. Ability to succinctly and accurately summarize processes.
