Position Summary
The UNC Department of Surgery is seeking an independent and detail-oriented team member to serve as a full-time project manager on a portfolio of research focused on patient-centered care and health equity in surgery.
The project manager will work closely with Dr. Gita Mody and a team of multidisciplinary collaborators in public health, oncology, nursing, and other areas across UNC and elsewhere to carry out her research portfolio. Specifically, the project manager will collaborate with an interdisciplinary research team to implement a 5-year grant from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute focused on the implementation of a digital health intervention to improve post-discharge care. The project manager will also manage any additional grant proposals, communications, and assist on other Mody Lab research projects.
The project manager will serve as the primary staff member responsible for the planning and timely implementation of research activities for the Mody lab. This includes overseeing the day-to-day project operations and coordinating research activities (i.e., facilitating team meetings, managing project budgets, project planning, progress reports to funders, developing protocols, IRB applications, and other related study tasks). The project manager will also contribute to the team’s vision setting and dissemination of study findings through presentations at state and national research conferences and through published manuscripts and grant writing in collaboration with the study team.
Currently in its first year, the 5-year grant Improving Thoracic Surgical Care using Electronic Patient-Reported Outcomes is refining a mHealth intervention designed to track recovery after discharge from surgery using surveys of patient-reported outcomes including symptom burden and physical functioning. In partnership with the UNC PRO Core, the Mody Lab is designing symptom assessments coupled with patient- and provider-facing digital training materials to meet practice-level needs and test the efficacy of the intervention to prevent hospital readmissions, patient satisfaction and other outcomes.
Dr. Mody is the Director of Thoracic Surgical Oncology, an Assistant Professor in the UNC Department of Surgery in the School of Medicine, and Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Physician Health Leadership Program at the Gillings School of Public Health. Dr. Mody is leading a team in leveraging evidence-based insights from implementation science to tailor effective, complex health interventions for North Carolina patient populations including lung cancer and chronic lung disease patients. Dr. Mody is also actively engaged in the UNC-Malawi Project’s Cancer Outcomes Research Program, where she conducts research on quality of life in esophageal cancer patients. In total, this work not only informs practice in periprocedural care, but also policy on a global scale. Dr. Mody and her team value innovation and deep engagement and commitment. More information about her work is here: https://sph.unc.edu/adv_profile/gita-mody-md-mph/.
Applicants from under-represented socioeconomic, racial/ethnic, and sexual backgrounds are strongly encouraged to apply.
