Job Description Summary:
The Department of Internal Medicine is seeking a Research Project Manager to support and manage complex research portfolios in collaboration within our institutional structures, faculty, sponsors, and the Internal Medicine Research Office. This position will manage and coordinate all extramural development, major program projects or set of programs established to address a key area of specialized focus within the Department. This position provides a full range of administrative support for the research enterprise in the Internal Medicine Research Office. However, the position’s
primary goal will be to ensure adequate support to IM faculty, including overseeing management of extramural funds while providing variety of services and technical support to the department.
Key responsibility of the Research Project Manager is to lead and coordinate management and oversight of IM extramural portfolio, which include tactical management, administration, and team support to ensure the project proceeds on time and within budget parameters. Provides integrated management, and support in the strategic planning for major projects (Program Projects, Center Grants, Institutes, Core Centers, Collaborative Undertaken) that impact core functions and components across the Department. To accomplish this, the Project Manager will collaborate closely with Research
Leadership and faculty, external sites, and staff (for multi-site projects) and will be responsible for supporting awards within the department, including managing deliverable, timelines, financial reporting, oversight of project costs, contracts, and agreements.
Job Description:

Required Qualifications

Education: Bachelor’s degree OR an equivalent combination of relevant education and work experience

Work Experience:

  • 5 year's work experience

  • Experience working in a university or large academic institution

  • Strong oral and written communication as evidenced by application materials and interview

  • In-depth understanding of regulations governing research (Understanding of the Federal Regulatory Code, GAAP, Uniform Guidance, HIPAA)

  • Experience with statutes and guidelines relevant to regulatory affairs in research

Preferred Qualifications

Education/Certifications:

  • Master’s Degree (Finance, Business Administration, Management)

  • Certified: CRA, CCRP, CCRC

Work Experience:

  • 3-5 years’ experience in large clinical unit

  • Huron Research Suite, Workday, Velos and Excel

Skills:

  • Good judgment with analytical problem-solving ability

  • Ability to provide high quality service in a timely manner

Job Duties Outlined

Under general guidance and with latitude for the exercise of independent judgment and initiative:

  • Supports the planning, implementation, and coordination of major program projects, center grants, including multi-site, sponsored by industry, government, non-profit foundations, or private organizations.

  • Provides advanced professional/technical leadership, consultation, and expertise within the program's area of focus, including researching and identifying funding opportunities for researchers across various disciplines.

  • Responsible for the support of the proposal implementation of complex program project, basic and clinical research, and contracts in collaboration with faculty, using discretion and independent judgment to make decisions that impact the successful management of grant and contract.

  • Serves as liaison to sponsors, multi-sites, internal stakeholders, contract research organizations, principal investigators, community partners, and internal units as needed.

  • Facilitates strategic growth to support the development of major grant proposals.

  • Provides at least quarterly review with key project leaders to assess projected financial portfolio, including prospective proposals submissions, ensuring that research program objectives are communicated, met, and results are documented.

  • Using discretion and independent judgment, contributes to the development of division and departmental plans and objectives for administrative and financial support of large-scale research projects.

  • Supports internal implementation of general principles of GAAP standards in reviewing financial compliance and consistency with contracts/agreements over the life of the project, following institutional and sponsor guidelines.

  • Oversees, manages, evaluates, and monitors performance of direct reports - develops annual target goals for supporting staff - meets regularly and provides feedback to staff on goals and accomplishments in performance evaluations.

  • Supports the training, development, management and mentoring of staff providing instruction, guidance and reference materials for project, institution, and agency-specific policies and procedures.

  • Assists Director in the development of standard operating procedures and workflow processes for the Internal Medicine Research Office. Identifies, evaluates, and recommends process improvements in on all areas relating to streamlining processes and increasing efficiency to maximize resources ensuring effective and efficient workflow and adherence to quality standards for department and self.

  • Provides support in the fiscal management of the department’s research enterprise.

Compensation Statement:

The pay range listed for this position is determined by our compensation program using market data and salary benchmarking. A combination of factors is considered in making compensation decisions including, but not limited to, education, experience and training, qualifications relative to the requirements of the position, and funding. At the University of Kansas Medical Center, a reasonable estimate for the starting pay range will be the minimum to midpoint of the posted range, taking into account the combination of factors listed above.
