Position Overview

ATLAS promotes learning and improved outcomes for all students. We create technology-based learning and assessment systems that are accessible and academically rigorous. Our center serves all students, including students with disabilities and struggling learners, as well as their educators. 

We specialize in map-based learning systems that are informed by research on skill development, assessment design, and teacher professional development. Our grant-funded research includes writing instruction, science professional development, support for teacher trainers, and science assessment design. We also foster partnerships with diverse organizations that share our focus and commitment to quality learning experiences for all students.
Our center develops and delivers state assessments. The Dynamic Learning Maps® (DLM®) Alternate Assessment System assesses students with the most significant cognitive disabilities in English language arts, mathematics, and science. We also offer custom social studies alternate assessments. Our broader state assessments include the Kansas Assessment Program, the Career Pathways Assessment System, and the Kansas English Language Proficiency Assessment. 

ATLAS is seeking a Research Project Coordinator to manage and coordinate a variety of development projects. The coordinator will work with multiple development teams to ensure that complex processes are implemented and documented consistently and will ensure that quality assurance criteria and delivery deadlines are met.
We especially seek candidates with experience in one or more of the following areas:

  • Research and development project management
  • Large scale assessment development
  • Professional development and training
  • Virtual learning instructional design
  • Process improvement
  • Quality control processes

This is a full-time (40 hours/week), unclassified position at the Lawrence campus.


Job Description

50% - Manage and monitor workflow and deliverables for multiple ATLAS projects. Examples of work performed may include:

  • Facilitating the collaborative development of project plans using project planning tools.
  • Overseeing the development of research projects, assessments, professional development modules, or instructional resources.
  • Documenting development procedures including identifying milestones and creating workflow maps.
  • Identifying process improvements and applying risk management strategies.
  • Reviewing materials for accuracy and alignment to project goals.
  • Tracking and reporting project milestones and deliverables.

- Coordinate internal resources to support development projects. Examples of work performed may include:

  • Coordinating the establishment of a work plan.
  • Scheduling and leading cross-team meetings for special projects.
  • ​Coordinating handoffs between project staff and project teams.

- Coordinate and occasionally assist in the preparation and dissemination of project documents. Examples of work performed may include:

  • Preparing documentation about development processes for technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Performing quality control checks on completed work and finished products.
  • Producing and or reviewing written text, instructional resources, and/or technical reports for a variety of media.
  • Reviewing and editing written text, final reports, eLearning modules, and/or web-based resources.
  • Editing supporting material/media to engage target audiences.
  • Contributing to the development of instructional resources.

- Perform pre and/or post award transactional activities relating to grant and contract proposals.  Examples of work performed may include:

  • Preparing or reviewing draft proposals.
  • Performing quality control checks on completed work prior to submission.
  • Producing and or reviewing technical documentation for grant applications, annual performance reports, or Institutional Review Board applications. 
  • Coordinating writing, submission, and administration of grant activities.
  • Tracking project deadlines and proposal submissions.

5% - Other duties as assigned.


Position Requirements

  • Due to COVID restrictions, this position will begin teleworking and may transition to on-site work when deemed safe and necessary.
  • This position will be a hybrid of on-site work and telework as deemed by supervisor.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree and one year of work experience in project management, education, instructional design, assessment, or related field OR high school diploma and 4 years of work experience in project management, education, instructional design, assessment, or related field
  • At least one year of experience using a variety of project management tools as evidenced by work history or professional training
  • At least one year of experience using Microsoft Office suite applications
  • Excellent oral and written skills as evidenced by application materials and interview
  • Experience with remote conferencing technology as evidenced in application
  • Ability to synthesize complex ideas and information that are relevant to a particular audience as evidenced by work history or professional training

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree or project management certification
  • At least one year of work experience with all phases of grant management
  • At least one year of work experience in large scale assessment development
  • At least one year of experience managing multiple, concurrent and/or complex projects
  • At least one year of experience planning and coordinating special events
  • Successful experience working in a multidisciplinary, team-based environment as evidenced by work history, professional training, or a combination of both
