Job Summary
The California Preterm Birth Initiative (PTBi) is seeking an Research Project and Communications Manager to help develop, manage, and maintain the research and communications involving in partnerships with external contractors and community members. PTBi is dedicated to ending racial disparities in birth. We conduct and fund innovative birth research that centers BIPOC lived experiences and strives to dismantle the racist structures and beliefs driving the epidemic. The Research Project and Communications Manager will work closely with the Director of Communications and the Executive Director as well as other partner faculty and investigators on studies involving qualitative data and short surveys related to perinatal outcomes. Will develop proposals to fund research efforts and conduct the management of research efforts including helping to manage and interface with community members and affected communities through the Voice for Birth Justice public awareness campaign. The Research Project and Communications Manager will serve as a key liaison for the aim across the initiative and will work closely with other PTBi teams focused on community engagement, collective impact, and interventions.
The position is within the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences and reports directly to the Director of Communications,
- Manages, coordinates, and supports work groups to advance initiative and build communications about initiative’s research.
- Develops and collaborates on proposal or grant writing that is relevant to community engagement, community awareness, and qualitative research projects, or initiative’s overall fundraising efforts, and can coordinate teams to write and submit these proposals.
- Leads and participates in specific funded projects that are require qualitative analysis or community researcher engagement.
- Designs and maintains online/website content, designing publications and outreach campaigns, electronic communications, newsletters, digital storytelling efforts, and marketing materials.
The successful candidate will possess a desire to strengthen the initiative’s research portfolio and programming; the capacity to support and strengthen partnerships between PTBi and its research partners and stakeholders; and a commitment to strong communication and marketing of the initiative’s breakthroughs. Must have strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to manage many moving priorities and projects as well as demonstrate a high level of written and oral communications skills specifically in communicating with researchers, community members, and staff.
This is a part-time (50%), one-year contract position. The work is mostly remote but employee will need to come onsite for any team trainings/meetings. Work arrangement will be subject to change based on business need/manager discretion.

Department Description
Prematurity (i.e., preterm birth and its related outcomes) is the leading cause of neonatal and childhood mortality worldwide, disproportionately affecting women of color in California. Unfortunately, despite years of traditional medical research, very little progress has been realized. The Preterm Birth Initiative (PTBi) at UCSF is a highly-collaborative, transdisciplinary, Cell-to-Society research program that aims to manage and reduce the risks of preterm birth. This donor-funded transdisciplinary research program is comprised of a domestic arm (“PTBi-CA”, funded by Marc and Lynne Benioff, administered through the Dept of Ob/Gyn & RS), and a global arm (“PTBi-East Africa”, funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, administered through the Institute for Global Health Sciences).
The Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences (Ob/Gyn & RS) is a major academic Department in the School of Medicine, engaged in clinical, research and training activities at the Parnassus, Mt. Zion and San Francisco General Hospital campuses, the new Betty Irene Moore Women’s Hospital at Mission Bay, as well as satellite locations throughout the Bay Area, with an annual operating budget of $146 million The Department has 100 full-time faculty, 117 other academic appointees, 13 post-doctoral fellows, 20 clinical fellows, 32 residents, 138 voluntary clinical faculty and 270 staff. Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in public health, public policy, a social science, health communication or related field and/or equivalent experience / training
- Three-plus (3+) years directly relevant experience
- Broad academic knowledge of or applied background in academic research proven by successful participation in the planning, initiation, execution, and reporting of research
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with community stakeholders, study participants and individuals with a wide range of racial, ethnic and educational backgrounds
- Ability to use discretion and maintain all confidentiality
- Analytical / problem-solving skills
- Strong skills in analyzing, researching and synthesizing large amounts of data for preparing sound and relevant proposals / analyses
- Ability to multi-task with demanding time-frames
- Possess knowledge of project management best practices and have the ability to apply those skills to situations/tasks as needed
- Strong writing skills, including storytelling
