This position will be funded to work on a study called B'More Healthy Brain and Child Development (B'More HBCD). As one of 25 sites across the country conducting this study, the B'more HBCD team will be a part of the Wendy Klag Center in the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, with direct collaboration across the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, Johns Hopkins Hospitals and Kennedy Krieger Institute. The study plans to recruit pregnant women and follow these women and their babies through age 10, with a focus on monitoring neurodevelopment. At least one-quarter of the women recruited will be active substance users (alcohol, tobacco, marijuana, opioids, opioid agonists or stimulants) during pregnancy. Responsible recruitment and support for participants will require deep and authentic community relationships with organizations across the city of Baltimore and surrounding counties. It is imperative that the team work closely with the Baltimore community to ensure we can provide as much support and access to resources for enrolled families. We plan to offer referrals and supportive resources for enrolled women who may need assistance with housing, food, healthcare access, substance use treatment, and other needs. We are seeking a Research Program Assistant II  (RPA II) who can utilize their rapport-building skills to assist in the recruitment, screening, consenting, and enrollment of women from the Johns Hopkins Hospital and other OB/GYN and L&D units, as well as other participants referred from other recruitment resources. Will also be trained to be a family manager who will do primary data collection as part of the prenatal visit, as well as biosample collection at the prenatal visit and delivery visit, sample processing (using a centrifuge, aliquoting, etc.), and other data collection tasks as needed. Effective communication and interpersonal skills are critical as the position involves significant interaction with patients.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

• High degree of understanding of research and applies general analytical skills to administer the logistical implementation of assigned projects, and to identify situations requiring special attention.
• Utilizing this knowledge, will ensure adherence to research protocols, operating procedures, and all associated internal/external regulations.
• Will act as the primary contact for study participants, including scheduling, confirming appointments, and escorting/directing to various locations on/off campus.
• Will participate in the collection and processing of bio-specimens. This will include collecting aliquoting placenta and cord blood samples, urine, stool, and saliva from adult and child participants.
• Work closely with the other recruitment coordinator to assist in the recruitment of potential participants within the Johns Hopkins OBGYN clinical offices, as well as WIC offices throughout Baltimore, and to assist the community outreach coordinator with other Outreach events and opportunities to engage with community members to educate about the study and identify interested participants.
• Maintain moderately complex tracking database/spreadsheet based on study requirements utilizing Excel, REDCap, or similar software applications.
• Utilizing working knowledge of study will participate in meetings to provide operational updates, report on any operational issues, and may make recommendations for resolutions to new/outstanding operational issues.
• Complies with all regulatory/IRB guidelines as established by the HBCD consortia.
• Ensure that case files and accompanying paperwork are organized and current.
• Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

• High School Diploma or graduation equivalent.
• Two years related experience.
• Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Preferred Qualifications

• 2 years experience working on research studies that had a focus on substance use, maternal and fetal health, child health and development, or related research fields.
• Experience in consenting, screening, and enrolling of participants into research studies.
