Position Summary:


Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Research Program Administrator for the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences. Reports to the Director of the Rutgers Climate and Energy Institute (RCEI) and works independently with minimal supervision within broadly defined work objectives of the Institute's programs.
The RCEI links a large and diverse group of scholars from throughout the University New Brunswick campus to form a multidisciplinary center of excellence for scholarship on climate change, renewable energy, and associated environmental, social, and policy issues. The position will have an emphasis on Development of the Rutgers Climate and Energy Institute and will work with RCEI staff and leadership to identifying relevant grant opportunities, and facilitate groups of faculty and staff in their efforts to write and submit resultant grant proposals. Will be the primary point of contact between RCEI and federal funding agencies with climate or energy missions; interface with Rutgers contracted companies to track federal funding opportunities, clarify agency requirements, and relay these to RCEI staff and affiliated faculty. This individual will also direct all aspects of the RCEI Strategic Plan with input from leadership and key sponsors. The success of the program and securing this future funding will largely reside with this position.
Among the key duties of the position are the following:
  • Researches and analyzes funding agencies and organizations to identify potential funding sources for specific projects and programs.
  • Establishes working relationships with funding agencies and organizations, and facilitates the discussion concerning research opportunities, and collaborates with faculty and staff to develop areas of potential research; and develops successful proposals.
  • Provides consultative support and creates activities and resources that support the proposal and submission process; information on funding requirements; up-to-date availability of upcoming government, corporate, and foundation grants; fellowships/scholarships; and other relevant information.
  • Reviews budgets; makes proposal presentation recommendations; develops management plans, evaluation plans, and instructional information; and creates resources to support faculty and staff with the grant submission process.
  • Responsible for developing plans that focus on increasing research and outreach grant funding within the Institute and consults with the Director, faculty, senior researchers and university administrators to execute and implementing this strategy through outreach efforts to sponsors and faculty.
  • Develops the organizational and strategic planning programs that the position is responsible for implementing. Will be providing input and guidance regarding the organization's research strengths and weaknesses, and strategically assessing and recommending which opportunities align with the organization's capabilities and capacity.
  • The goal is to generate additional grants and funding in order to strategically increase the visibility of our institute and to garner its place as a top tier public research university.
  • Facilitates collaborative relationships between the RCEI and other units and departments within the university.
  • Conducts analysis of grant activity in these disciplines and is responsible for the development and preparation of annual and related reports.

Minimum Education and Experience:

  • An earned Bachelor's degree in a subject area related to climate change or renewable energy; demonstrated experience in grant writing, proposal evaluation, or inter-disciplinary team facilitation.
  • A minimum of five years experience in a leadership or grant management role of increasing responsibility in research administration, or other relevant field that includes development, facilitation, and submission of successful grant proposals, and project planning and management.

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, and experience in team facilitation, are essential.
  • Candidate must have the ability to perform tasks that require moderate physical activity, including driving, walking long distances, standing, bending and/or stooping, lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 20 pounds.

Special Conditions:

  • Due to the nature of this position, travel to investigate prospective grant proposals, attendance at professional organization meetings, and various sponsoring agency locations, where they will work directly with external stakeholders and/or sponsors will be required.
