About the Department
 

The Department of Anesthesia & Critical Care is a clinical academic department at the University of Chicago. The department has been continuously productive not only in its scientific contributions, but also in providing outstanding basic medical care in anesthesiology. Its members have helped to establish the role of anesthesiologists as consultants in fields such as intensive care, oxygen therapy, the recovery room, and inhalation therapy. From a one-member section in 1928, the department has grown to a 60+ member faculty; the department includes 50+ residents, 20+ nurse-anesthetists, 14 administrators and 70+ staff members. Faculty members are active nationally and internationally in the field, and former trainees of the department hold prominent academic positions in the United States and throughout the world.


Job Summary
 

The job performs routine assignments that facilitate and promote a research project or contributes to the scientific direction of a research resource. Receives instruction, guidance, and direction from others.

Responsibilities

  • Research Professional position in Pharmacology, Tang Center for Herbal Medicine Research (https://tangcenter.uchicago.edu ).
  • Investigate mechanisms of gut microbiota and endogenous metabolites in inflammation and colon cancer.
  • Study the role of gut microbial manipulation in enteric and therapeutic response in cellular and animal models.
  • Perform standard scientific techniques including cell culture and in vivo mouse procedures.
  • Perform detailed inflammatory profiling of cells/tissues.
  • Ability to conduct bioinformatic analysis.
  • Ensure the validity and reliability of data at all times.
  • Help write up findings for submission to refereed journals.
  • Collaborates on development of new research projects with academic and community-based organizations.
  • May present work at scientific meetings.
  • Performs other related work as needed.


Minimum Qualifications
 

Education:

Minimum requirements include a PhD in related field.

Preferred Qualifications

Education:

  • Ph.D. in the biological sciences.

Experience:

  • Candidates with expertise in in microbiology and cancer studies with independent research.

Preferred Competencies

  • Demonstrated expertise in molecular, cellular, microbiological, and biochemical techniques preferred.
  • Experience with cell culture, immunoassays, molecular biology, animal models, and bioinformatic analysis of enteric microbiome is desirable.
  • Experience in metabolomics is a plus.
  • Previous experience in in vitro cell culture test compound evaluations, in vivo mouse experiments with techniques including flow cytometry, real-time PCR, western blot, ELISA, immunohistochemistry, mouse oral gavage, animal anatomy, and/or enteric microbiome culture and analysis.
  • The ability to work as part of a team and to be open minded and cooperative.
  • The ability to apply new concepts and have a creative approach to problem solving.
    Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • The ability to organize your own work with minimal supervision and prioritize in response to deadlines.
