About the Department
 

The Research Professional 1 will assist with designing and performing experiments to study the biogenesis and dynamics of yeast organelles. The methods used will include static and live-cell confocal microscopy, image analysis, recombinant DNA manipulations, yeast culture and transformation, SDS-PAGE, immunoblotting, and electron microscopy. Regular oral reports on research progress will be presented. Data will be assembled to generate figures, and results will be described and interpreted for publication and for grant applications.


Job Summary
 

The job performs routine assignments that facilitate and promote a research project or contributes to the scientific direction of a research resource. Receives instruction, guidance, and direction from others.

Responsibilities

  • Performs experiments and collects and analyzes data. Participates in the promotion of a research project.
  • Participates in the preparation and writing of grant applications and reports, and co-authors/authors scientific research manuscripts. Provides peer review of grant applications and scientific manuscripts.
  • May present work at scientific meetings.
  • Performs other related work as needed. 


 


Minimum Qualifications
 

Education:

Minimum requirements include a PhD in related field.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience

  • Prior experience with fluorescence and confocal microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, image analysis, basic biochemistry and protein analysis, recombinant DNA manipulations and analysis, yeast culture and transformation. 

Preferred Competencies

  • Knowledge of standard research techniques relevant to cell biology research, with a focus on membrane traffic and organelle biogenesis.
  • Familiarity with standard laboratory equipment and common data analysis software.
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills. Attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team. 

Working Conditions

  • Moderate physical activity which includes reaching for materials, carrying materials, safe handling and manipulation of chemicals and biological materials according to approved protocols, writing, computer use, standing at the bench, and bending at the waist/crouching to access certain pieces of equipment.
  • Requires the ability to stand for long periods of time, very good manual dexterity and the ability to perform fine motor tasks. 
  • Weekend/Evening hours are occasionally needed.
