The School of Environment & Forest Sciences has an outstanding opportunity open for a Temporary Research Phlebotomist Lead, based at its Pack Forest facility.

We are seeking a research phlebotomist to work with an interdisciplinary team on an innovative study to evaluate the impacts of nature contact on human health. The NIH-funded study will investigate the link between forest bathing and well-being, in collaboration with Dr. Bratman and members of the Environment and Well-Being Lab (envirowellbeing.uw.edu ), and Drs. Simpson, Riederer and Young from the UW SPH Department of Environmental and Occupational Health Services.

The Research Phlebotomist will be supervised by the Principal Investigators and other study collaborators, and will collect, prepare, and transport blood specimens for the novel study. Specimen collection will take place at several sites within the UW Pack Forest near Eatonville, WA. The project requires attention to detail and training in conducting research with human participants. Interested candidates should have some experience with human subjects, as well as a dedication to adherence to project timelines and completeness of documentation.

Employment Period: April – August 2022, intermittent with potential for study extension.

General Duties

• Collect specimens inside and outside of a clinic environment
• Adhere to safety guidelines, including but not limited to, correctly donning and doffing personal protective equipment (PPE) and ensuring sterile specimen collection
• Perform venipuncture in adult populations
• Transport laboratory specimens within locations at Pack Forest as required
• Collaborate with support staff such as study coordinators, principal investigators, co-investigators, research assistants, laboratory couriers, and other external collaborators to achieve research objectives
• Adhere to the research protocol; ensure compliance with research protocol of survey staff and external collaborators
• Provide or describe information regarding research protocol to participants; answer participant and community questions regarding the research; refer participants to research assistants for specific questions and or clarification
• Collect data and produce timely logistical reports on field data collection progress
• Work different shifts to attain necessary serum sampling, including mornings and afternoons
• Work outdoors in different temperatures and other aspects of the environment
• Some teleconference work and possible travel required to Seattle for meetings with research leadership team and collaborators

Requirements

• High school graduation AND completion of a phlebotomy course OR equivalent education/experience.

Legal Requirement

• Obtain State of Washington certification as a Health Care Assistant Level A within sixty days of employment date.

Desired Skills

• Medical Assistant - Phlebotomy Certification with the Washington State Department of Health.
• Ability to exercise good judgment regarding personal safety and the safety of others.
• Experience collecting specimens in research settings, especially outside of a clinic environment.
• Experience working with diverse populations and settings.
• Professional communication skills in-person, via email, and over the telephone.
• Demonstrated ability to work and contribute as part of a team.
