Primary Purpose of Position
Supports Research/Instructional Laboratory Operations by assisting in project management, digital tooling/digital fabrication conceptualization, providing fabrication of specialized equipment to satisfy faculty research initiatives, instructional needs, conferring with research personnel to recommend procedures used in the development of experimental research equipment, assisting in the preparation of plans and specifications for such equipment and experimentation, and assisting with student project requests. Ability to repair and maintain laboratory equipment essential to the Civil and Environmental Engineering curriculums.
Minimum Education/Experience
Required Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree and two years of general research experience; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
University Preferred Qualifications:
Graduation from a four-year college or university and two years of general research or laboratory experience preferably including supervision of others; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Familiarity with a variety of the research fields concepts, practices and procedures. Demonstrated experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals.
Essential Job Duties
The primary role of this position:
  • Manage and supervise all activities necessary to operate one or more research and instructional work settings such as a laboratory, shop, field and/or classroom (hereafter referred to as "laboratory”).
  • Facility planning and maintenance, inventory control, purchasing and maintenance of laboratory equipment, safety & security control, monitoring environmental risks and quality control, and supervising student activities.
  • Development/refresh of policies regarding access and training may be necessary. Teamwork is one of the important aspects of the position.

  • Knowledge/experience of/with fabrication/making and general construction methods such as carpentry, machining, welding, 3-D printing or other means, material handling.
  • Experience and ability driving trucks with trailers or forklifts.
  • Experience and ability to instruct students in safe operation of hand tools and typical shop equipment.
  • Experience and ability with mentoring student projects in the shop (like steel bridge, concrete canoe, student research projects).
  • Experience in management of stocks, inventories and material stores.
Necessary Licenses or Certifications
  • Valid Driver License needed or ability to obtain upon first day of hire.
