Job Summary

Business, the global economy, and societies around the world are facing dramatic upheaval as a result of rapid technological change driven by digitization, the application of artificial intelligence, and machine learning. The Digital Data Design (D^3) Institute at Harvard produces cutting-edge research into the changes in the business landscape as a result of digital and AI transformations. The Institute formally launched in July 2022 to produce research into business and operating models, reskilling, customer intelligence, and other strategic decisions faced by all industries.

D^3 provides Harvard Business School with a new architecture for rigorous research through a lab-based model to deliver scaled social science research. These labs conduct research and experiments with companies to identify new learnings and solutions to some of the hardest challenges in digital and AI transformation.


Position Description

We are actively recruiting Research Managers to support our lab operations team and take on an exciting range of research and program management responsibilities in support of both faculty and staff. The scope of the role will be aligned to one of our six Communities of Practice. Our Communities of Practice are focused on the following six research domains:

  • Generative AI and the Future of Business Technology
  • Human-Centered Technology
  • Data, Privacy, Security, and Regulation
  • New Operating Models and Business Platforms
  • Future of Work
  • Performance and Metrics

The Research Manager works directly with faculty supervisors to define and manage research priorities and execute projects. All of the D^3 research roles also report to the Senior Director of Labs for the Institute and an administrative manager in the Research Staff Services office. The Research Manager will work closely with the lab team, D^3 internal platforms, and external industry, government, and university partners to execute research activities. It is a highly collaborative position that is critical to the research mission of the labs.

Primary Duties:
As part of a dynamic team and working with competing demands, the Research Manager will work with one or more labs in a Community of Practice supporting the Principal Investigators and the entire Lab team with the following responsibilities:

  • Assist with the development of the strategic direction of the Lab.
  • Under the direction of the Faculty and the Dˆ3 Leadership Team, manage a diverse range of world class research initiatives.
  • Work closely with the Lab Operations team to assure adherence to HBS and Institute polices and processes.
  • Prepare various types of content for a wide range of audiences (including presentations, videos, briefs, summaries, white papers, and practitioner-orientated articles).
  • Assist PIs and other research staff with the design and execution of experiments, data collection, and analysis.
  • Act as a project manager for lab related work and events, including tracking objectives and key results and supervising a project team.
  • While representing the Lab, build and maintain effective and productive relationships with both internal platforms and external partners.
  • Lead the planning effort for internal and external meetings, events, and conferences.
  • Assist PIs, Postdoctoral Fellows, and Research Assistants (RAs) in managing all aspects of our research compliance needs, including the coordination of Institutional Review Board (IRB) submissions, data use agreements (DUA) and data safety application process. Take a lead role to promote best practices for the responsible conduct of research and research integrity.
  • Build and maintain productive working relationships with multiple faculty members.
  • Foster a cohesive lab community, working closely with Research Associates and Postdoctoral Fellows; assisting visitors and students with their engagement with the labs.
  • Prepare deliverables and reports related to internal and external funding, monitoring timelines and budgets, collaborating with the internal finance team, communicating with external funders as appropriate.
  • Work with the PIs on planning, preparation, and submission of grant proposals.
  • Organize regular travel and manage routine lab purchases.
  • Responsible for other duties as assigned.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree and at least 5 years of relevant work experience are required.
  • Ability to write for a variety of audiences.
  • Demonstrated experience managing complex projects.
  • Working knowledge of research methods and compliance protocols.

Additional Qualifications and Skills

  • Comprehensive understanding of data science principles and how they can be used to facilitate social science research.
  • Experience managing staff and project teams, ideally in higher education or a research environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • A scientific or social science background.
  • Ability to navigate ambiguity whilst managing multiple tasks and changing priorities.

Additional Information

This is a full-time term appointment starting immediately through June 30, 2024, with potential for re-appointment for the following year. All HBS Research Manager roles are structured as one-year appointments.

This role is offered as a hybrid (some combination of onsite and remote) where you are required to be onsite at our Boston, MA based campus 2-4 days per week. Specific days and schedule will be determined between you and your manager.
