Organizational Unit Overview
The William E. Laupus Health Sciences Library serves as the primary information resource center for the University’s instructional, research, and patient care programs in the health sciences. It also serves as the comprehensive information resource center for health care professionals who practice in northeastern North Carolina. In addition, the Laupus Library serves as a secondary resource for nontechnical health care information for health care consumers in the local community. The Laupus Library emphasizes proactive information provision including the acquisition of current and relevant materials, reference services that recognize the existence of diverse levels of client expertise and needs, and the implementation of new technologies for accessing and managing information.
Job Duties
The Research Librarian is a full-time faculty position in the Laupus Health Sciences Library in the Division of Academic Affairs of East Carolina University.
The Research Librarian is responsible for providing leadership for the library’s systematic review service, assisting researchers across the ECU Health Sciences Community with discoverability and promotion of scholarly publications, and providing in-depth research consultations. This position reports to the Assistant Director for User Services.
Primary Responsibilities:

Leads the library’s systematic review service program; this includes directly supporting systematic reviews and managing the service, including developing reports, addressing technical issues with related systems, and mentoring members of the service.
Conducts comprehensive searching for the health sciences campus researchers resulting from in-depth consultations within an appointment-only research consult model. Results may include systematic, scoping, or other review types.
Develops relationships with the Associate Deans of Research and serves on appropriate research committees to promote library research support services to the greater health sciences community.
Develops expertise in and provides education to health sciences campus on open access and open science trends and principles, publication metrics/bibliometrics, data management planning and journal/funder requirements.
Develops, implements, and assesses strategic instructional and curricular programs or courses through a variety of methods and formats aimed at the information needs of basic scientists in the health sciences, primarily but not limited to the Brody School of Medicine.
Develops expertise in areas of interest to basic scientists, which may include instruction on genetic information databases.
Engages in successful relationships with faculty, students, and staff in assigned areas, and collaborates with other librarians and research-oriented units across the Health Sciences Community and University as appropriate.
Supervises the Research Data Librarian (1 FTE) and the Professional Writing Consultant (.25 FTE) temporary position supporting the writing needs of Health Sciences Campus authors.
Stays abreast of new tools and approaches to partner with and support the health sciences research community.
Participates in strategic planning and goals setting at the Health Sciences Library, including leading initiatives as appropriate.
The Research Librarian will collaborate with Laupus liaison librarians and colleagues from Academic Library Services on research and educational activities as appropriate. Additional responsibilities include participating in University and Laupus Library committees and projects as assigned; engagement in scholarly activities and professional service; and performing other duties as assigned.

Minimum Education/Experience
Master’s degree in library and information studies from an ALA-accredited program or other equivalent accredited graduate degree. Qualifying degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions and conferred by the time of hire.
Experience with biomedical information resources, data management, and traditional and alternative research impact measurement tools.
Experience with health sciences and/or STEM database searching and familiarity with common information workflows in scientific research settings.
License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation
None
Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education
Bench science, clinical research experience, or an expressed understanding of translational research principles.
Previous professional work experience as an academic or health sciences or science librarian.
Experience with evidence-based information retrieval and in-depth literature searching.
Experience with data visualization tools, or the aptitude and interest in learning such tools.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
Experience with mentoring
Experience with project development and management
Experience providing instruction in an academic setting.
Awareness of scholarly communication issues within the health sciences.
Demonstrated organizational and problem-solving skills.
Self-directed temperament and proactive in promotion of services and resources to support the research community.
