Summary

The Department of Environmental Health Sciences in the School of Public Health at the University of Michigan has a position opening for a Research Laboratory Technician Senior. This is a one year term appointment, expected to continue based on funding availability. The Svoboda Lab is seeking a full time Research Laboratory Technician Senior to pursue research on developmental environmental exposures, epigenetics and cardiovascular health. The Svoboda Lab investigates the effects of chemical exposures on cardiac differentiation, development and function using cultured cell lines, stem cells, and animal models. Exposures under investigation include chemicals such as phthalates (e.g. DEHP, DINP, DBP), heavy metals (lead, arsenic), and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). Mechanisms of interest include altered cardiac electrophysiology, metabolic programming, and epigenetic effects.


Responsibilities*
  • Plan and execute research experiments in human induced pluripotent stem cells and cardiomyocytes with minimal supervision.
  • Analyze data using statistical software and adjust experimental plans as new data are generated and the objectives of the project shift.  
  • Regularly provide recommendations to the PI about the next steps. 
  • Present data at local and national meetings and take the lead on writing manuscripts.  
  • Proactively evaluate and optimize experimental methods and develop new methods as necessary.  
  • Perform trouble-shooting as issues arise and provide recommendation to the PI for solutions.  
  • Train undergraduate and graduate students and technicians in lab equipment operation, assay/experimental design and conduction.  

Required Qualifications*

Bachelor's degree in related field required and at 1-3 years of experience working in research laboratories. Master's degree in biological sciences or other related sciences and at least 1 year experience working in stem cell research preferred. 

Ability to work independently and lead 1-2 research projects essential. 

Experience with data management and analysis in a software such as SAS, R, etc. highly desired. 

Excellent oral and written communication skills are essential.

Organizational skills, attention to detail, ability to work with minimal supervision within a large team of researchers are all critical attributes.
