A Research Laboratory Technician Associate position is available in the Moon lab (https://themoonlab.org/ ) within the Center for RNA Biomedicine and Department of Human Genetics at the University of Michigan. We are seeking an enthusiastic, team-oriented, tenacious individual with a growth mindset, a healthy appetite for knowledge and skill acquisition, and a hearty sense of humor who will contribute to projects on the molecular mechanisms of neurodegeneration. The Research Technician will be part of the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative Neurodegeneration Challenge Network where they will have access to specialized scientific training and career development opportunities. The Moon Lab has been built to remove resource bottlenecks, allow lab members to focus on skills development, and facilitate scientific discovery for all team members. Self-driven and thoughtful recent graduates looking for a steep learning curve to rapidly level up as a critically thinking scientist should apply.

The Research Technician will learn how to use CRISPR/Cas9 to engineer human cell cultures and learn to work with human inducible pluripotent stem cells and differentiate neurons to study RNA biology in models of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and frontotemporal dementia. 

  • Cell Culture Generation and Maintenance: Preparation of cell culture media and associated reagents and growth factors. Maintenance and cataloging of various cell culture lines. Carrying out cell culture experiments as per protocol and direction of the scientific team, and maintaining thorough electronic records of cell culture data.
  • Experimentation: Assists in research by gathering data, administering tests, recording observations and measurements, and setting up and operating laboratory equipment. Clean up after experiments. Under direction, design and perform experiments.
  • Communication with PI and Lab Members: Analyze data using various data analysis programs.  Prepare data for presenting, and present data to PI and Lab Members.  Attend and participate in lab meetings.  Attend other departmental learning opportunities as appropriate and approved by supervisor.
  • Bachelor's degree in Cellular and Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Biology, Genetics, Biophysics, Biomedical Engineering, or another closely related field.
    Some undergraduate wet laboratory experience.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong analytical skills.
  • Tenacious, engaged, determined, resourceful, organized, and action-biased.
  • Able to adhere to laboratory safety protocols.
  • Strong computer skills including proficiency in Google Docs Editors suite and/or Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.
  • Strong motivation to learn, or working knowledge of, molecular biology lab techniques including sterile technique, cell culture, and working with DNA.
  • Experience working with tissue culture cells.
  • Prior experience with fundamental molecular biology techniques such as PCR and western blotting.
