Summary

We are searching for a research specialist associate who has experience in animal phenotyping and laboratory management to join our NIH-sponsored Animal Phenotyping Core within the Michigan Mouse Metabolic Phenotyping Center (MMPC-Live).

This candidate will be responsible for carrying out in-vivo and in-vitro physiology/pharmacology experiments in rodent models of metabolic disorders. He/she will be accountable for evaluating metabolic phenotypes in these models, specifically for assessment of whole-body glucose and lipid metabolism using 3H- and 14C- labeled tracers. This individual should have hands-on experience and expertise in in-vivo physiology/pharmacology and in the handling of rodents in particular, including some experience in performing microsurgery or intravascular infusion in conscious mice and/or rats.

Responsibilities*
  • May act as liaison with other departments, divisions or organizations. 
  • Will work closely with the Principal Investigator and lab manager to develops, designs and conducts one or more small or moderately complex research experiments in line with plan, reviews progress and evaluates results.
  • Formulates research methods and suggests options for improving quality, identifies potential problems, recommends and implements solutions, and collaborates in the development of new techniques. 
  • Trains users in equipment operation and laboratory techniques, explains and demonstrates technology and equipment capabilities, operations, limitations and outcomes. 
  • Coordinates data collection and screening and verifies the data. 
  • Conducts analysis of data, interprets and implements research methodology based on outcome of analysis. 
  • Co-authors publications and may co-present results with Principal Investigator at meetings and/or conferences. 
  • Has oversight for day-to-day operation of laboratory and may supervise exempt and non-exempt research and support personnel.

Required Qualifications*

Research Lab Specialist Associate: 

  • Bachelor's degree degree in a recognized field of science or learning which is directly related to the duties of the position.
  • 1-3 years of experience in a related field. 
  • A strong work ethic, excellent oral and written communication skills, and the ability to work with minimal supervision in an organized fashion are essential.
  • Ability to work in teams is critical. Some occasional weekend work will be required.

Desired Qualifications*
  • Master's Degree in Cell Biology/ Biochemistry/ Physiology or related field preferred.
  • A two-year minimum commitment is strongly preferred.

M-F days some occasional weekend work
